The Philadelphia Eagles were stunned by the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football, as they ended up suffering a 34-17 defeat to kick off Week 6. After winning their first four games to open the season, the Eagles have now lost two straight, and the Giants exposed some serious flaws that the team is going to need to fix up sooner rather than later.
One of the biggest issues for Philadelphia right now is its secondary, with its cornerback room in particular being quite beat up. Everyone knows that general manager Howie Roseman loves to make a good trade, so with the team dealing with several injuries at the cornerback spot, the team has been urged to make a trade with the New York Jets.
Eagles Urged to Trade for Michael Carter II
Entering the season, the starting boundary cornerback alongside Quinyon Mitchell was viewed as one of the Eagles’ biggest weaknesses. While Philadelphia tried to fill the spot, all of the players they brought to town have struggled. Making matters worse, Mitchell picked up a hamstring injury against the Giants, which put the Eagles in a very tough spot.
Kelee Ringo and Adoree’ Jackson have been the top two options to work alongside Mitchell, but they both have been awful so far this season. Cooper DeJean is solid, but he primarily plays in the slot, and Jakorian Bennett and Mac McWilliams are both dealing with injuries. With Mitchell leaving the team’s Week 6 loss early, that forced Philly to turn to Ringo and Jackson, and the results weren’t pretty.
The trade market is beginning to heat up across the league, and one guy who could be available is Michael Carter II of the Jets. While he’s currently dealing with a concussion, Carter has started all four of the games he’s played in this season, although he has struggled to pick up new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks’ system. With Carter potentially not being a part of New York’s long-term plans, and the Eagles desperately needing help at cornerback, there could be a deal to make here.
“The Eagles desperately need to get some reinforcements in for the secondary, and that’s where Carter can step in,” Richard Louis wrote for Section 215. “He’s currently dealing with a concussion, but is a player who’s signed through the 2027 season, giving Philadelphia a long-term solution.”
Should the Eagles Trade for Michael Carter II?

Carter has 13 tackles and two pass deflections this season, but opposing quarterbacks have a 109.7 passer rating when targeting him in coverage. Beyond his struggles on the field, Carter isn’t exactly a best fit for the Eagles, because he also primarily plays in the slot, which is where DeJean is holding down the fort. One of these guys could shift to the outside, but it’s fair to wonder whether they will be effective in a new position.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, though, and at his best, Carter is a sticky cornerback who has a nose for breaking up passes. With Ringo and Jackson not panning out, and Mitchell potentially set to miss time, something needs to be done at this position. If the Jets are open for business on Carter, it would make sense for both teams to at least discuss a potential deal.
