The Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the busiest teams in the NFL ahead of the start of the 2025 campaign, and they continue to make moves at a frantic pace. On Sunday, the Eagles swung a trade with the Minnesota Vikings to acquire veteran quarterback Sam Howell, and later in the day, they reunited with offensive lineman Fred Johnson in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Of course, when players are added to the roster, that means a spot has to be created for them. With Howell coming on board, that forced the Eagles to move on from one of their players, and they ended up parting ways with Lewis Cine, a former first-round safety who suffered an injury in their preseason finale against the New York Jets.
Eagles Release Safety Lewis Cine
Cine entered the league with a lot of hype, as he ended up getting selected by the Vikings with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Thanks to a slew of injuries, though, Cine only suited up in 10 games for Minnesota before they ultimately released him after the 2023 campaign. The Buffalo Bills scooped him up, and he ended up spending the majority of the 2024 season on their practice squad.
In January, the Eagles signed Cine off the Bills’ practice squad, and while he didn’t take the field for them, he ended up winning a Super Bowl ring with them when they took down the Kansas City Chiefs. Given Cine’s upside, he was a player Philadelphia felt was worth taking a flier on, and they had hopes that they could help him realize his potential.
And yet, throughout training camp, Cine’s position with the team has been in jeopardy, and while he recorded an interception against the Jets, he was seen on crutches after the game with an apparent injury. Sure enough, when Howell was acquired from the Vikings, it resulted in the injured Cine getting shown the exit door.
“The Eagles waived/injured Lewis Cine. He was on crutches in the locker room after Friday’s game, when he had a diving INT,” Zach Berman of The Athletic shared in a post on X.
Could Lewis Cine Return to the Eagles on Their Practice Squad?

Depending on the severity of Cine’s injury, he could return to the Eagles as a member of their practice squad after the team makes the remainder of their roster cuts. Again, as a former first-round pick, Cine has upside, but his inability to stay healthy is disrupting any sort of positive momentum he could possibly generate.
If there’s a team that has the freedom to stash Cine and work on building him back up, it’s Philadelphia. They already have a solid safety duo in Reed Blankenship and Sydney Brown, which means they wouldn’t have to rush Cine into anything he isn’t ready for. For now, his time with the team is over, but it wouldn’t necessarily be a surprise to see the Eagles reunite with Cine in the coming days.
