Just days before the Buffalo Bills faced their most important game of the NFL season so far, their injured star defensive lineman Ed Oliver delivered an update on his condition and when, at least according to himself, he may return to action. A person in his inner circle later posted an online video showing Oliver shortly after his biceps surgery.
The former first-round draft pick suffered a tear to his left bicep during last Sunday’s Bills’ 40-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The following day, coach Sean McDermott confirmed that Oliver would require surgery for the biceps injury and would likely miss the remainder of the regular season.
Oliver Speaks to News Outlet Before Surgery
Obviously, Oliver will not be available for Sunday’s nationally televised game against the Bills arch-rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. But if there were ever any questions, the Bills settled the issue by placing Oliver on the injured reserve list Tuesday.
“He’s having surgery and expected to miss multiple months,” wrote NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe. “Holding out hope he can return if Buffalo makes a lengthy playoff run.”
Wolfe’s reporting matches an update given by Oliver himself, when he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport that same day, for his surgical procedure which appeared to take place at a Los Angeles medical facility.
Asked for an update by a reporter from the site TMZ Sports, Oliver replied, as quoted by the site, “Hopefully we can make a push to go to the Super Bowl and I’ll be back.”
Oliver added that he was sure he would be recovered in time for the Super Bowl 60, set for February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California — assuming his teammates manage to get there without his services.
Video Shows Oliver After Surgery
It appears that Oliver underwent the surgery the following day, because a video appeared online posted by the TikTok account @dymonddrakell. The account is operated “by a woman who is clearly close to Oliver. It’s not clear what his relationship with her is, as there is no public knowledge of who he is dating or if this is a family member. Not that it matters, but just to be clear,” according to Buffalo radio station WBUF.
In the video, Oliver appears to be feeling just fine
@dymondrakell This who a character and can’t be serious🤣. Can’t take him no where!! The part of the NFL I hate the most… But thank yall for the well wishes and prayers❤️….Minor setback for a major comeback. #comedy #hotwheels #fyp #recoveryhumor #gobills
Renowned Sports Surgeon May Have Done Procedure
According to Dr. Kyle Trimble, a physical therapist who analyzes Bills injuries on his site Banged Up Bills, Oliver “likely saw Dr. Neal ElAttrache who does a lot of work for high profile players and does elbows like Tommy John surgery. Biceps repair would be an easy one for him.”
ElAttrache “is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles and is recognized for treatment and research of knee, shoulder, and elbow injuries,” according to the doctor’s website. “He is frequently recognized as a top sports medicine specialist, having been identified as one of the ‘Top 50 Most Powerful in LA Sports’ by the Los Angeles Daily News and ‘The 100 most powerful people in MLB‘ by USA Today.”
It should be noted, however, that there has been no independent conformation that ElAttrache performed Oliver’s surgery. That conclusion is simply a speculative deduction by Trimble.
