Ex-Bills Playmaker Could Be Heading Back To His Old Team

The Buffalo Bills have been no strangers to wanting to upgrade their roster during the season.

A few years ago, the Bills acquired Green Bay Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas, and he has been a key player for their team over the past two years.

Douglas is currently a free agent and is seeking a new contract elsewhere, and so is another big-time player the Bills acquired at the trade deadline last season.

Last October, Buffalo traded for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper, and he never lived up to the hype.

Cooper recorded 297 receiving yards and two scores in eight games for Buffalo last year, and his lack of production might be why he hasn’t been picked up by any team yet this offseason.

Amari Cooper Could Head Back To The Raiders

Since Cooper has consistently played at a high skill level throughout his NFL career, he may be picked up before or during training camp.  Cody Benjamin from CBS Sports thinks the Las Vegas Raiders should try to sign Cooper.

“The Raiders certainly made offense a priority this offseason, acquiring Geno Smith via trade, then spending a first-round pick on Ashton Jeanty, giving the silver and black two cornerstone playmakers when you include second-year tight end Brock Purdy,” Benjamin wrote. “The one area that could still use veteran help is wide receiver, and Cooper knows the franchise well, beginning his career with the Raiders and briefly working alongside current quarterbacks coach Greg Olson. If they’re serious about competing immediately under new head man Pete Carroll, it makes sense they’d use some of their excess salary cap space on a pass target.”

The Raiders drafted Cooper in 2015 and spent four seasons there before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

In 52 games with the Raiders, Cooper recorded 3,183 receiving yards and 19 scores.

The Raiders should do everything possible to sign Cooper, as they need help at the receiving position.

The Bills And Cooper Seem To Be Over

Las Vegas is in a weird spot since they just traded for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, so they are in win-now mode, but they are predicted to finish in last place in the AFC West.

The Raiders are in a division with the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers, all of whom made the playoffs last season. Even though the Raiders improved, they will still be a distant fourth.

It wouldn’t hurt for the Raiders to sign Cooper and see what he has left in the tank. If Cooper shows that he can’t play like he used to, then cutting him and moving on to someone else is always an option.

For the Bills, their time with Cooper is over. If Buffalo had any interest in wanting Cooper back, they probably signed him at the start of the offseason, but four months have passed, and Cooper is still sitting on the open market.

The Raiders open their 2025 season at the New England Patriots on Week 1, so there is a chance Cooper will be back in uniform playing in that game.
