Ex-Jets WR Malachi Corley Picks New NFL Home, Had ‘Multiple Opportunities’

A former New York Jets pass catcher has found a new NFL home.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz shared on social media that Malachi Corley is signing with the Cleveland Browns.

“I’m told Corley had multiple opportunities on the open market, and ultimately chose Cleveland,” Schultz revealed.

“Malachi Corley is still just 23 years old. The plan is to start on the practice squad with a chance to get elevated early in the season. His skillset, if used correctly, could be a weapon in today’s NFL,” Schultz added.

A Fall From Grace for the Former Coveted Jets Standout

On Tuesday, August 26, the Jets waived Corley ahead of final roster cuts.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed that Corley was the “highest drafted” player from the 2024 draft class to be cut.

He was the No. 65 overall pick in the third round last year. The Jets traded up to land him, and the front office and coaching staff were equally giddy about him as a prospect.

“Malachi Corley: 9 games, 3 receptions, [and] 1 embarrassing gaffe in prime time. Will go down as one of the biggest Jets draft blunders in recent memory,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini posted on X previously Twitter.

NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY said on “Jets Final Drive” that Corley’s ultimate downfall was “immaturity and entitlement.”

Corley Has a Chance to Turn His Career Around

The former Western Kentucky product’s NFL career is off to a rough start, but that doesn’t mean it’s over.

Things didn’t work out between Corley and the Jets; that much is obvious.

Corley didn’t help himself with his attitude and his mistakes on the field.

“The coaches felt his route running lacked precision. His maturity also came under scrutiny, with some in the organization privately questioning his approach, according to people with knowledge of the situation,” Cimini said.

However, it’s also fair to point out that the Jets didn’t do him many solids either. The coaching staff struggled with preparation, offensive game-planning, and there was constant dysfunction present.

Now in Cleveland, Corley doesn’t have the expectations of a highly drafted prospect. Instead, he is a new man with a fresh start. What he does from here is up to him, but a change of scenery may just be what the doctor ordered.

Jets Need to Learn a Valuable Lesson

Corley was a raw prospect coming out of a small school. Anyone with eyes knew that he needed some refining at the next level.

If the Jets were so crazy to draft him, you’d think they would have had a better plan to maximize his skill set. For a large chunk of the season, Corley rode the bench as a healthy scratch as the coaching staff was confounded on how to utilize him.

Better draft preparation and a better plan would have put the team in a better position to understand what kind of player Corley was and whether or not he fit the vision.

Even though the coaching staff that drafted Corley is no longer here, that doesn’t mean the current regime can’t learn from their mistakes to prevent them from haunting them again in the future.
