Ex-Lions Coach Aaron Glenn Already on the Hot Seat in New Job

The Detroit Lions lost both of their coordinators this offseason, but one could be on his way to the unemployment line.

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn left to take a head coaching job with the New York Jets, starting with some big changes including dismissing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Glenn is on the hot seat now after the team fell to 0-6 with a loss to the Denver Broncos overseas, a defeat that has Glenn facing criticism for his clock management.

Aaron Glenn Under Fire for Failed Sequence

The Jets looked lost in the 13-11 loss on Sunday, gaining just 82 yards of total offense. The team had a chance to get points just before halftime, but Glenn allowed time to expire instead of calling a timeout as the team reached near midfield.

The sequence led to some public criticism, with the NFL Network’s Rich Eisen calling out Glenn during the broadcast.

“The Brits are wondering what is happening in London, and so are the American announcers,” Eisen said.

The sequence also had Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson heated, with cameras catching a heated conversation with Glenn as the team was heading to the locker room. Commentator John Frascella said he considered the mistake a fireable offense for Glenn.

“You can catch a little bit of Garrett Wilson SCREAMING at Aaron Glenn here, Glenn has to resign at halftime, this is the worst coaching in the history of the sport,” Frascella wrote in a post on X.

Others joined in calling on the Jets to fire Glenn, who remained defiant after the game. He had a testy exchange with a reporter who asked whether he would consider benching quarterback Justin Fields, who

“Come on, man, what kind of question is that?” Glenn responded.

The Jets coach added that he wouldn’t bench a player just for one bad performance. Fields completed 9-of-17 passes for 45 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

“There was a number of guys that you know, sometimes the league is like this [up and down] and there are guys who have bad games. That doesn’t mean you bench him. You know better than that,” Glenn said.

Lions’ New Defensive Coordinator Facing His Own Challenges

The Lions promoted from within after Glenn’s departure, giving the defensive coordinator job to former linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard. Though the Lions have jumped out to a 4-1 start this season, Sheppard is facing challenges as the team struggles with injuries and high-powered opponents.

The Lions have already faced Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens and have Patrick Mahomes and the dangerous Kansas City Chiefs tonight.

“Yeah, they gave me murderer’s row my first year as a coordinator, I told people,” Sheppard said, via SI.com. “As far as the play-callers and the quarterbacks, they weren’t going to take it easy on me. But make no mistake guys, we’re going up against a Hall of Fame coach and a Hall of Fame quarterback. Right now, if they stop their careers, they are going in the Hall in Canton. So, the utmost respect for these guys – what they’ve done and what they’re currently doing to be able to hold the line.”
