Ex-Patriots Fan Favorite Urges Trade for Disgruntled AJ Brown

The Patriots certainly did their part to support the cause of flighty NFL receivers this season by signing free-agent Stefon Diggs despite the fact that Diggs has been recuperating from an ACL tear he suffered October 2024 while playing for the Texans. Diggs has been good for the Patriots, and just had a six-catch, 101-yard game in Week 4, though at age 31, he is not likely to be a long-timer in New England.

If there is someone who could fill that role, though, he might well be playing in Philadelphia right now. That would be three-time Pro Bowler AJ Brown, the Eagles star who began his career playing for the Titans under Mike Vrabel. Brown is disgruntled (again) with the Eagles, and has been public with his frustration on Twitter/X.

And for former Patriots tight end Jermaine Wiggins, Brown is a player the Patriots should be targeting at the November trade deadline.

Patriots ‘Clearly Need a No. 1 Receiver’

Here’s what Wiggy, as the former tight end fan-favorite from East Boston is affectionately known, had to say on the “Greg Hill Show” on WEEI on Monday:

“All you gotta do is look at AJ Brown, cryptic tweets, you go, New England Patriots—pick up the phone and do whatever it takes to go get AJ Brown. This guy wants out of Philadelphia and Philadelphia clearly doesn’t want him.

“He went to Twitter or X or whatever we’re calling it these days, and had a cryptic tweet. … And then he put up his stats which was two catches for seven yards. So, you’re New England and you have a relationship because of Mike Vrabel and AJ Brown and you clearly need a No. 1 receiver that you would be getting the football to constantly.”

AJ Brown Is Sending Cryptic Tweets

Brown is, no doubt, an elite receiver. He had back-to-back 1,400-yard seasons after he was traded from the Titans to the Eagles, and had 4,031 yards in three seasons coming into 2025. But he has been relatively quiet this year.

Brown had six catches for 109 yards in Week 2, but has had four catches for 42 yards in the three other games. On Sunday against the Buccaneers, he was targeted only once, making an eight-yard reception.

That inspired Brown, who notably was seen reading a book on the sidelines during a game last year, to quote a verse from the Bible: “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.”

Wiggins noted that the tweet is cryptic, though it does seem plain that Brown is unhappy.

Can the Patriots Trade for Brown?

The three questions for the Patriots, though, would be:

  1. Is Brown actually available?
  2. What would it take to get him to New England?
  3. Is he a fit for this roster?

The Eagles have not been parading around announcing their intention to trade Brown. He is only 28, and would certainly have value. But if the answer to question 2 is that the Eagles want a first-round pick for him, it’s hard to see the Patriots diving in after him.

In the wake of the Micah Parsons trade, remember, Vrabel said that the Patriots did not get involved in those discussions because they don’t have the depth to be trading picks for stars.

Still, though Diggs has been good, dropping a star like Brown into the receiver room would change things for quarterback Drake Maye. The Patriots have decent receivers, certainly an improvement over where they’ve been in recent years. But Brown would be a game-changer.
