Fan Favorite Makes Bills Active Roster After Strong Preseason

The Buffalo Bills had several significant decisions to make on Tuesday. The NFL preseason is over, which means teams must reduce their active roster to 53 players by 4:00 PM ET on Tuesday.

The Buffalo Bills are one of the few teams in the NFL that struggle with making tough roster decisions. Many teams don’t even have 53 players they want on their active roster, so cut-down day isn’t that difficult. But the Bills have one of the most talented rosters in the league, which means good players could be looking for a new home this week.

Bills Part Ways With Laviska Shenault And KJ Hamler

One of the areas Buffalo was going to have a hard time making decisions on was in the receiving room. The Bills already had receivers Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer, and Curtis Samuel penciled in, so only two more were going to make the team. Usually, teams only keep six receivers, and there was a fight in the position group for Laviska Shenault, KJ Hamler, Elijah Moore, and Tyrell Shavers to make the roster. On Tuesday morning, several sources reported that Shenault and Hamler were both released, suggesting that Moore and Shavers would likely be added to the active roster.

Hamler and Shenault both signed one-year contracts for a cheap price this offseason, so parting ways with them isn’t going to hurt the cap room. It was likely one of them would’ve made the 53-man roster. However, Shavers put on a show this preseason, causing more competition in the receiving room.

Shavers Makes Bills’ 53-Man Roster

According to Alaina Getzenberg from ESPN, “Bills WR Tyrell Shavers has made the 53-man roster, per source.”

The Bills signed Shavers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and spent the last two years as a member of the practice squad. Last year, he appeared in three regular-season games, recording 69 yards and a touchdown in the Bills’ last regular-season game against the New England Patriots.

Coming into the preseason, it was going to be hard for Shavers to make the 53-man roster with all the additions Buffalo made to the receiving room this offseason. But he stood out, recording 123 receiving yards and one score in three preseason games.

In the Bills’ preseason finale, Shavers had a one-handed touchdown reception against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That one-handed catch could’ve been the icing on the cake for Shavers to make the final roster. Throughout the preseason, fans were calling for him to make the 53-man roster, and they got their wish.
