Fast-Rising James Franklin Replacement at Penn State Reportedly Staying at Current School

As we enter November, we are getting closer to having the college football carousel craziness begin. There are some high-profile jobs open. Penn State, Florida, LSU, and Auburn lead the way in the big openings.

Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Virginia Tech, and Arkansas are the next tier of openings. James Franklin, fired at Penn State in October, is the big-name free agent coach who could sign soon. Other candidates who could make a move are currently at a pivotal point in their season.

Several active coaches have been linked to a number of the jobs. They include Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss and Eli Drinkwitz at Missouri. One name that keeps popping up at some of the openings is reportedly close to being locked up at his current ACC school.

Louisville Closing Reportedly Extending Jeff Brohm

Jeff Brohm is in his third season at his alma mater, Louisville. He had the Cardinals knocking on the College Football Playoff door before an overtime loss to California at home last Saturday night. According to Pete Nakos of On3, Louisville is close to taking him off the market this coaching cycle with an extension.

“Sources have told On3 that Louisville is still working through the extension with Brohm and is making progress. No coach has won more games in the Atlantic Coast Conference since the start of the 2023 season than Brohm, and he has a career record of 4-2 against Associated Press top-five ranked teams. Brohm currently makes $5.9 million at Louisville, which ranks 43rd in the country and sixth in the ACC,” Nakos wrote.

Brohm currently has a 26-10 record at Louisville heading into Friday night’s home game against a struggling Clemson team at 4-5. The Cardinals picked up a big road win two weeks ago, rallying from a halftime deficit at Virginia Tech to remain in the ACC race, only to lose to the Golden Bears at home this past weekend.

He has been a hot name this coaching cycle. Louisville’s making a financial commitment to him is a statement. That’s not good news to the rest of the schools looking for their next head coach.

Louisville Locking Up Jeff Brohm Is a No-Brainer

Brohm has been linked to the Penn State and Florida openings. He has never sounded like someone who is looking to move on. It is understandable why he would be committed to Louisville, and he appears very happy in Kentucky.

“We’ve got good resources here,” Brohm recently said when asked about his name being linked to other jobs. “We’ve got a good football team. For me, it’s concentrating on the season and worrying about the next game, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Brohm has proven to be able to recruit through the portal to get players to come to Louisville. He landed USC transfer quarterback Miller Moss this season. Their chances of reaching the CFP went up in smoke after losing to Cal. Louisville is making sure that they don’t lose its head coach in what is expected to be a wild coaching cycle.
