On Wednesday afternoon, news broke that the University of Michigan would be firing head coach Sherrone Moore, effective immediately. The initial report, although abrupt, did not indicate any criminal wrongdoing.
Following the announcement, the university revealed that Moore’s firing was “for cause.”
“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” a statement from Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel read. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
The initial statement surfaced around 4 PM EST on Wednesday afternoon.
Hours later, reports from Saline, Michigan, indicated that the now-fired coach had been detained by local police officers.
“Breaking: Ex-Michigan coach Sherrone Moore was detained by police in Saline, Mich. this evening and turned over to police in Pittsfield Township for investigation into potential charges,” ESPN’s Dan Wetzel wrote in an X post.
Wetzel included a report from an unnamed source in the post.
“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” the report read. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”
The story is still breaking, and more details will be provided as they become available.
