Former Broncos QB Russell Wilson Gets Unfortunate Career Update

Russell Wilson’s tenure with the Denver Broncos began with a blockbuster trade, included a record-setting contract extension and a clash with the second head coach of what was a two-year stint, and ended after the clash despite a historic dead cap hit.

Two years after the Broncos cut him, Wilson’s career has taken another unfortunate turn.

Now a member of the New York Giants, the 10-time Pro Bowler’s fourth team since the start of the 2021 season, Wilson may have rapidly descended to the final phase of his career.

Ex-Broncos QB Russell Wilson’s Career Takes Dour Turn

Wilson, who was the Broncos’ starting QB from 2022 deep into the 2023 season, and the Giants faced the New England Patriots on “Monday Night Football” in Week 13. However, Wilson was among the Giants’ inactives for the contest.

It was a noteworthy moment in the ex-Seattle Seahawks star’s NFL career.

“Russell Wilson is a healthy scratch for the first time in his NFL career,” B/R Gridiron posted on X on December 1. “Wilson will serve as the emergency QB for the Giants.”

The Giants, who lost to the Patriots 33-15, began the season with Wilson as their starter. Wilson ceded duties to Jaxson Dart after Week 3. Wilson, 37, had 778 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions on 57.9% completion during his three starts.

He has a 53-0-0 line on 44.4% completion in three relief opportunities since losing his QB1 role.

Wilson seemingly had an opportunity to reclaim his starting role, but it never materialized for the veteran.

The Giants turned to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star and 2015 No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston – who has ties to Broncos head coach Sean Payton, his HC with the New Orleans Saints – when Dart was sidelined in concussion protocol.

Wilson was the No. 75 overall pick of the 2012 draft by the Seahawks.

He is on a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the Giants this season. It is a far cry from the five-year, $245 million extension he got from the Broncos.

With more than $313 million in career earnings, Wilson is also a Super Bowl champion, winning with the Seahawks following the 2013 regular season. However, he could have trouble finding another starting job, given how his last three stints have gone.

Wilson is 23-35 in his last 58 starts, going back to the start of the 2021 season with Seattle.

Russell Wilson Sends Message Amid Former Teammate’s Comments

Wilson, known even during his time with the Broncos for his eternal optimism, shared a message ahead of the official announcement that he would be inactive for the Giants’ game against the Patriots.

He also shared an excerpt from the Bible, specifically, Luke 18:27.

“Heart of GRATITUDE! God You are making a way! [praising hands emoji],” Wilson posted on X on December 1. “Jesus replied, ‘What is impossible with man is possible with God.’”

Wilson’s post came amid a social media firestorm over former Seahawks teammate and fellow quarterback Trevone Boykin’s comments regarding a holiday spent at the ex-Broncos star’s house.

Boykin claimed during an episode of his “House of Playmakers” podcast published on November 24 that the setting, during Thanksgiving, was devoid of family.

He also claimed Wilson and wife Ciara were “weird.”

Boykin’s comments sparked an outpouring of support for Wilson from former players, including Broncos legend Shannon Sharpe. Ex-linebacker-turned-media personality Emmanuel Acho pointed to Boykin’s past legal troubles to question why he attacked Wilson.
