Former Bucs Backup QB Signs With Falcons

A former Tampa Bay Buccaneer quarterback has just recently signed with a new squad, given a new chance at a better foundation for his NFL career. Too bad it’s an NFC South rival.

Trask Finds New Opportunity in Atlanta After Tampa Bay Departure

After training camp this season, the Buccaneers released Kyle Trask. He had been with them for many years, and had not received another NFL chance until now. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons practice squad, which sees him on an NFL roster for the first time since August.

Trask was of course drafted by the Bucs in 2021 after a successful collegiate career with Florida. At the time, everyone thought he would be the immediate successor to Tom Brady. He ended up sitting behind Tom Brady for two years, and when Baker Mayfield arrived, went into competition with him, and lost. He then backed up Mayfield for the 2023-24 season, and was expected to return after throwing only 11 passes for 28 yards. The team did sing him to a one year deal as a backup worth 2.7 million, but they brought in Teddy Bridgewater and ended up releasing Trask, making Bridgewater the backup instead.

He then tried out for the Colts, to no avail. However, his new home with the Falcons makes perfect sense. After the season-ending injury to Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons needed some kind of insurance as they only had two rostered QBs in Kirk Cousins and Easton Stick. As he is only a member of the practice squad, he may not get the chance to travel with the team that much and may only be an emergency backup in certain situations. Still, it is important to note that Cousins is injury prone, having had an Achilles tear just two short years ago. Most importantly though, is that Trask could be familiar with a similar scheme to Tampa Bay’s with Zac Robinson running the show.

Injury-Riddled Falcons Turn to Former Bucs QB for Depth and Development

This could all end up being a sense of false hope for Trask, but in terms of finding employment, it’s a great opportunity to show NFL coaches and scouts that he still has something to offer as well. Plus, he gets to learn from another one of the NFL’s great journeyman veterans in Kirk Cousins. On the other hand, playing time is probably what he desires and unless anything major happens to Cousins along the way, he may not see the field at all. Still, after sitting behind one of the great quarterbacks in NFL history, Trask gets to finally make a name for himself.

The Falcons, while a close rival to the Bucs in the division, are a team looking towards the future. In the long run, that may not mean much to Trask as a practice squad member, but at the very least, being a member of an NFL team, no matter how briefly has to stand for something. Let’s hope that hie takes this opportunity and puts it to good use throughout the rest of his NFL career.
