Former Manchester United, Liverpool and England midfielder Paul Ince has been arrested and charged with drink driving.

The Daily Mail report that Ince was arrested on Saturday in Cheshire after a Range Rover crashed into a central reservation.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: ‘At around 5pm on Saturday 28 June, police were called following reports of a collision on Chester High Road, Neston.

‘The incident involved a black Range Rover which had collided with the central reservation barrier.

‘Officers attended the scene and arrested a 57-year-old man.

‘Paul Ince, of Neston, has since been charged with drink driving. Ince has been bailed to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Friday 18 July.’

Ince finished his playing career in 2007 and went straight into management, with short stints in charge of Macclesfield and MK Dons before a big step up to Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League in 2008.

He only managed Rovers for 21 games then returned to MK Dons in July 2009, with time at Notts County, Blackpool and Reading following.

Ince left the Royals in April 2023 and has not returned to management since.

His spell with Reading was the longest he had at any club in terms of matches, taking charge of 58 games, winning 18 of them.

The central midfielder’s playing days started at West Ham, leaving east London for Manchester United in 1989 where he won two Premier League titles.

The 53-cap England international moved to Inter Milan in 1995 before returning to the Premier League two years later with Liverpool.

Later in his career he had stints with Middlesbrough, Wolves, Swindon and made one appearance for Macclesfield.
