Former NBA Star Predicts Warriors Will ‘Blow It Up’ Midway Through 25-26 Season

I

t has been a quite offseason for the Golden State Warriors. A little too quiet, if you ask most people. While the rest of the NBA makes moves, the Warriors have been the only team to not make a single move– not a single re-sign, trade or free agent acquisition. A season removed from a second round playoff loss, and deep into their quest to get Stephen Curry and Draymond Green their fifth championship, the aging Warriors roster now face a lot of questions heading into the new season.

At one point considered an NBA dynasty, winning four championships during their reign of dominance, the league has since become much more competitive– with many teams entering the championship conversation in recent seasons. Now, the Warriors face a tough situation on how to build a championship caliber roster in today’s game. In fact, former NBA star Channing Frye, would not be surprised if the Warriors decided to completely start over at some point during the upcoming season.

Frye’s Take

On a podcast called ‘Road Trippin,’ Frye gave a hot take about the NBA season regarding the Warriors– stating that depending on the spot they are in, blowing things up could be a wise decision.

“I hate doing this. I’m not being a troll. The Warriors blow it up halfway through the season,” Frye said. “I do think that team will be good. But look at the trend of where the NBA is going. OKC is a very tall team. The Cleveland Cavaliers are a tall team. Boston is a big team. Denver’s a big team. Minnesota’s a tall team. Houston is extremely tall. Golden State is still playing small ball — and I don’t know if that works anymore.”

This past season saw the Warriors go on a run towards the end, which started when the team acquired Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat. But as the playoffs went on, and injuries started to pile up, the Warriors ran out of gas and fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. And as other teams, like the Oklahoma City Thunder, begin to take over the league, the Warriors will need to figure out how to get back to that level.

Why the Warriors Have Been So Quite

Many attribute the Warriors slow offseason to the holdup on the Jonathan Kuminga situation. Athlon Sports even believes that once the Kuminga situation is figured out, the Warriors will begin to make a lot of moves. But Frye thinks that the Kuminga situation is one of many issues that the Warriors need to hammer out, with major holes to fill throughout the rest of the roster as well.

“They have to make another move for me to be confident. [The Jonathan Kuminga situation] lingers. And who’s their starting center? I just don’t think you can be successful playing small ball anymore,” Frye said. “You need to have a legit big man. Maybe they go get [Nikola Vučević]. Maybe they get somebody. But who’s their shot blocker? Who’s their rim threat? Who’s their lob threat? They used to have those things.”
