Former NFL Coach Drops ‘Biggest Mistake’ Truth Bomb on Micah Parsons Contract Dispute

The Dallas Cowboys are one of several teams with a disgruntled superstar on their hands heading into the 2025 campaign. That player is linebacker Micah Parsons, who requested a trade earlier this month amid his ongoing contract dispute with the Cowboys. With Week 1 quickly approaching, there are no signs of a resolution being on the horizon.

In concept, this situation can be solved pretty easily. Dallas could pay Parsons what he wants, or trade him to another team that will. Neither of those options has happened yet, though, and when asked about the situation, former NFL head coach Mike Smith made his thoughts on what the Cowboys should do with Parsons extremely clear.

Mike Smith Weighs in on Micah Parsons’ Contract Dispute

Smith spent seven seasons as the Atlanta Falcons’ head coach, earning Coach of the Year for his efforts with the team in 2008. During that time, Smith turned the Falcons into a perennial contender, and during his time in charge, he learned how to manage superstar players and keep them happy throughout the course of the NFL’s lengthy season.

The situation the Cowboys find themselves in with Parsons is unique. Dallas has a history of botching contract extension talks and costing itself millions of dollars. With guys like Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, they eventually managed to find common ground, but with Parsons requesting a trade, things feel different this time around.

The longer Parsons remains without a new deal, the more likely it is that he will get traded before the start of the season. If you ask Smith, he thinks the Cowboys would be out of their minds to trade away Parsons, considering all he’s accomplished in the first four years of his career. However, he believes this is all just smoke and mirrors, as he doesn’t see Parsons getting moved anytime soon.

“It would be one of the biggest mistakes ever made in the history of the NFL, in my opinion,” Smith said in an interview with Betway Insider. “But it doesn’t matter because Micah Parsons isn’t going anywhere … He’s going to get signed by the Dallas Cowboys. They’re not going to let that guy leave the building.

“Jerry Jones and his staff will make sure that he’s ready to go against the Philadelphia Eagles on opening week. He is going to be playing for the Dallas Cowboys this season and for a number of seasons after, as long as he stays healthy.”

Should the Cowboys Trade Micah Parsons?

GettyDallas Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons could sit out Week 1 if contract negotiations don’t begin to pick up soon.

In just four seasons, Parsons has already racked up 52.5 sacks, earning four Pro Bowl selections and a spot on the All-Pro First Team twice. Considering how he’s only 26 years old, there may not be another defensive player in the league who is as valuable as Parsons. As a result, he’s rightfully looking to earn quite a hefty pay raise from Dallas.

While the Cowboys haven’t shown any interest in trading Parsons, they also reportedly aren’t openly negotiating a new deal with him currently. It’s left the team and one of its best players in limbo ahead of the start of the new season, and time is running out for Dallas to lock up Parsons and get him ready for Week 1 of its 2025 campaign.
