Former NFL Head Coach Goes on Epic Rant Over Cowboys’ Defense

Another week, another poor defensive showing from the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys haven’t done enough on that side of the football to start the season, and at this point, it’s fair to wonder just how much longer the organization will allow it to perform as poorly as it has.

That isn’t to say that the Cowboys should go out and fire Matt Eberflus already, but Jerry Jones has to go out and make a move if he wants any hope of fixing this season on that side of the football.

For now, the Cowboys will have to hear many question what they’ve done defensively, including former NFL head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan, now at ESPN, had some very concerning comments about what he believes the Cowboys’ defense is at this stage of the year.

“Where do you start? Where do you start?” Ryan asked. “You gotta stand for something. Hey, I’ve got an idea, I don’t know, it’s crazy, they’re running 11 straight (run plays) maybe we ought to blitz somebody off an edge to try get somebody in the backfield. I don’t now, it’s crazy. ‘Let’s play our zone, let’s play our zone because we’re so smart.’ No you’re so dumb. You’re so dumb. I can’t stand it. Do something.”

Jerry Jones Speaks Out on Cowboys’ Struggles on Defense

The question now for the Dallas Cowboys, as Ryan mentioned, is what they’re doing on that side of the football to improve.

When speaking to reporters, Jerry Jones didn’t exactly have the best answer. All he said was that they weren’t attacking the quarterback, and their pass coverage wasn’t good enough. Anybody who has watched the Cowboys over the first three weeks of the season could’ve easily figured that out. Jones, instead of saying stuff like that, has to go out and fix it for this Cowboys defense.

“We weren’t getting there, plus we weren’t covering them,” Jones said of pass rush and coverage, per ESPN. “That’s a bad combination.”

Kenny Clark Gives Blunt Message to Cowboys

There are some obvious answers to why the Dallas Cowboys’ defense hasn’t played the type of football it was hoping for entering the year. The most obvious of the bunch is that the team moved on from Micah Parsons, acquiring Kenny Clark and two first-round picks in return. Clark had some things to say about the defense early on, simply stating that the team has to be better at getting off the field.

“It’s tough,” Clark said. “We got to find a way to get off the field. Teams get worn down the more plays they get. So got to just do a better job with that, and it all starts with locking in on film, playing fast, understanding what you’re going to get and holding each other accountable to that.”

Arguably the most important defensive player on the team, Trevon Diggs, had similar comments.

“We’ve got to eliminate the big plays, just get stops and get off the field,” Diggs said. “That’s pretty much it. Do the things we’ve been doing in the past and get it right.”
