Former San Francisco 49ers Fan Favorite Signs With Buffalo Bills

On Tuesday September 30, 2025, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the Buffalo Bills are signing former San Francisco 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky to their active roster.

Wishnowsky was most recently a member of the Washington Commanders practice squad for Week 2 because of injury concerns to Commanders punter Tress Way. But, Way played in Week 2 and Wishnowky was subsequently cut from the Commanders.

Wishnowsky joins a 4-0 Bills team that is widely considered to be a Super Bowl favorite. He joins a special teams room with kicker Matt Prater and long snapper Reid Ferguson.

Wishnowsky Is Buffalo’s Fourth Punter

Yes, you read that right.

After they cut their veteran punter, Sam Martin, and he signed with the Carolina Panthers in the offseason, the Bills began a long, winding search for a new punter.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers punter Jake Camarda spent time with the Bills during the preseason, but was cut back on July 22, 2025.

To open the season, the Bills had Brad Robbins handling punting duties against the Baltimore Ravens.

But after Robbins managed only 39.5 yards per punt on 4 punts against the Ravens, the Bills cut him.

Then they signed Cameron Johnston. Johnston managed a bit better performance, with 44 yards per punt over the next three weeks. But he injured himself in Week 4 against the New Orleans Saints.

So Wishnowsky will be the third man to punt for the Bills in just five regular season games.

If he manages a better performance than Johnston while he is recovering from injury, perhaps the Bills will keep him around even after Johnston gets healthy.

But the Bills could also reinstate Johnston from the injured list and cut Wishnowsky. It all depends on Wishnowsky’s performance.

It’s a situation that 49ers fans, who love Wishnowsky, will definitely continue to monitor.

Wishnowsky’s Best Moments As A 49er

Mitch Wishnowsky burst onto the scene in 2019 in a big way, making a huge tackle in a preseason game against the Denver Broncos that took the football world by storm.

The “Boomin’ Onion” never shrunk out of the spotlight after that.

He had a big moment in 2024 when he called his own number on a fake punt and seemingly got a first down against the Seattle Seahawks…only for the refs to call it back due to a fluky penalty call.

He filled in and kicked extra points, he kicked field goals, handled kickoffs and of course, he made 11 tackles.

Fittingly for someone who handled duties outside of just punting, injuries brought Wishnowsky’s 49ers tenure to an end. He missed all of 2024 training camp and preseason with a knee issue, then missed the final 8 games of the 2024 season with a back injury.

49ers fans will always remember the Boomin Onion as someone who was willing to put his body on the line and go the extra mile for his team. It’s an attitude he learned playing Australian football growing up and took with him wherever he went.

Niners fans, are you excited to see Mitch Wishnowsky get another chance with Buffalo? Do you think he will win the starting job with the Bills?
