Wyndham Clark is under scrutiny following an alleged locker room outburst at Oakmont Country Club during the 2025 U.S. Open.
A photograph circulated widely on Saturday evening shows multiple lockers with collapsed doors, reportedly the result of Clark’s frustration after he narrowly missed the cut with consecutive rounds of 74.
Behind the Photograph
Oakmont lived up to its fearsome reputation, punishing many of its world-class competitors. Clark, only a stroke away from playing the weekend, found himself at 8-over after bogeying the final hole on Friday.
According to No Laying Up’s Tron Carter, Clark allegedly directed that frustration out of the course and into the locker room, damaging multiple lockers in the process
The initial image, which sparked widespread public reaction, originated on social media and showed at least two Oakmont lockers with their doors caved in.
Though the damage wasn’t captured live, the bag visible in the photo appeared to match Clark’s Titleist gear–reinforcing multiple reports naming him as the culprit.
Clark has yet to comment. Oakmont members spoke to Golf.com expressing mixed emotions. “Whoever did it, I don’t know who the f— they think they are,” one longtime member said. “I’d be tempted to show up at his next tournament and heckle him on the tee. You know, something like, Hey, buddy, how about I come to your house and kick in the shower doors?”
Not a First-Time Outburst
This alleged incident wouldn’t be Clark’s first public display of anger during a major. Just four weeks earlier at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, he threw his driver into a T‑Mobile sponsor sign in a fit of frustration–notably, a sign representing one of his own sponsors.
Clark later issued an apology on Instagram: “My actions were uncalled for and completely inappropriate, making it clear that I have things I need to work on. I hold myself to a high standard, trying to always play for something bigger than myself, and yesterday I fell short of those standards. For that I am truly sorry.”
The repeated behavior has raised concerns among fans and professionals, many of whom are calling for disciplinary action, including a suspension. One fan on X wrote: “He should be suspended. This is ridiculous.”
What Comes Next?
As of now, no official statement has been released by Clark’s camp or the USGA regarding the locker-room incident. For Oakmont, a venue historic not just for its greens but for its storied locker room, each locker bears the name of a past U.S. Open winner. However, the damage is about more than broken wood. It’s an emotional crack in traditions that date back decades.
According to Golf.com, “Another member, who was taking in the action inside the ropes Sunday evening, speculated that the members’ whose lockers were damaged would likely be in line for some form of restitution from Clark.”
Public opinion is leaning toward accountability. Many golf fans and analysts are hoping for USGA clarification on whether further sanctions or a fine is warranted. Meanwhile, the drama serves as a reminder: even the best players can snap when pressed against one of golf’s toughest environments.
