Former UFC Champ Sean Strickland Hit With Six Month Suspension

Former UFC champion Sean Strickland has been hit with a six-month suspension and a $5,000 fine for attacking regional pro Luis Hernandez at a Tuff-N-Uff event back in June.

After exchanging words with Hernandez, who was fighting his teammate, mid-bout, the former middleweight champ then stormed the cage along with teammate and fellow UFC fighter Chris Curtis.

While Curtis managed to get off with just a fine, Strickland threw several punches at Hernandez, resulting in him receiving a provisional suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) during July’s monthly meeting.

According to MMAJunkie, on Thursday, Strickland was hit with a six-month suspension and a $5,000 fine (plus legal fees) during the commission’s monthly meeting.

The outlet relayed a quote from NSAC chairman Dallas Haun, who praised Strickland for owning up to the mistake and making the commission’s job easy:

“Sean Strickland stepped forward. He made this process easy. He’s apologized for his behavior. We appreciate someone stepping up, owning something, and for a resolution to be come to quickly and with all parties in agreement. So again, thanks to Mr. Strickland. He’s made a mistake and he’s owned it and we appreciate that.”

With the retroactive six-month suspension, Strickland can return to action on Dec. 29, unless he completes an anger management course approved by the commission.

If he does, the suspension will be reduced to just 4.5 months.

Chris Curtis Fined $2,500 for Role in Altercation

As previously mentioned, Chris Curtis managed to get off with just a fine for his role in the Tuff-N-Uff altercation back in June.

From the sounds of things, because Curtis didn’t throw a punch, he wound up avoiding a suspension.

Despite that, according to MMAJunkie’s Nolan King, he’s been hit with a $2,500 fine (plus legal fees) for his role in the situation.

Last month, during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Curtis dished on the situation:

“We had some very interesting meetings with [NSAC].

“Nevada did kind of come down on us. It’s one of those things where they understand how the situation got out of hand, but they also said that it was unacceptable. … I ended up paying a decent little penny for it. I got a fine, Sean got some other stuff, which I’ll let him tell people about that at some point, I’m not going to out his personal business. But I got an interesting fine.”

Could We See Israel Adesanya vs. Sean Strickland Rematch?

Although Sean Strickland will be sidelined until early-November at the earliest, when he does return, Israel Adeseanya is eager to welcome him back to the cage.

While training with David Goggins back in April, Izzy revealed that he has his sights set on a rematch with Strickland.

More recently, during an interview with MMAJunkie in June, The Last Stylebender took some verbal jabs at Strickland, indicating that although he wants the fight, Strickland doesn’t seem to be as interested.

“I want to, but he’s busy at the moment with other stuff, so that’s him, but we’ll see. I’ll pick a fight this weekend.”

Despite the fact that Izzy planned to figure out the details of his next fight that weekend, there’s since been no word on his next bout.

Given that, perhaps with Strickland’s NSAC hearing out of the way, a rematch will come to fruition before the end of the year.
