Former Vikings First-Rounder Likely Won’t Make It to Week 1

The Minnesota Vikings have a long history of picking stellar draft picks, and that’s one of the reasons they’ve risen up to be one of the strongest teams in the NFC North. But, as they say, you can’t win them all, and some of the Vikings’ picks have been real doozies.

It’s always difficult to tell how a draft pick is going to turn out. Some of the players picked high in the draft end up not doing well in the NFL, while sometimes, undrafted free agents turn out to be fantastic. So, it’s a gamble, and the Minnesota Vikings have been on both sides of that.

Now, a former Vikings first-round pick is on the cusp of being cut by his current team. There are plenty of predictions out there that he won’t make it to Week 1, so it might be a dismal end to the offseason for the one time favorite.

Former Minnesota Vikings Player May Be Cut, Again

GettyLewis Cine #6 formerly of the Minnesota Vikings celebrates a tackle.

Those who follow the Minnesota Vikings likely remember Lewis Cine. The team selected him in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, but he was cut before his third season with the team. Cine hailed from Georgia and earned a bevy of honors while in college. Now, it appears that he’s on the cusp of being cut from his current gig with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cine is in training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles, and 53-man roster projections from the Inquirer and Inside the Iggles don’t have him making the final cut. So, Cine could get cut from the team before Week 1 or just make the practice squad, which at this point, would be decent for him and his career.

On top of it, Cine wasn’t practicing Thursday, August 14, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports, via CBS. In addition, CBS Sports adds, “This is a new injury for Cine, who dealt with a hamstring injury earlier this month but suited up for last Thursday’s preseason opener against the Bengals. His status for the team’s second preseason game Saturday against the Browns is up in the air.” So, yet another injury could also make Cine an easy pick to not make the 53-man roster.

The Clock is Ticking for Ex-Vikings Player

In a Friday, August 15, feature by Adam Patrick for The Viking Age, Patrick says that “Cine might not be the biggest Minnesota draft bust of all-time (he made it to practice at least, unlike Dimitrius Underwood), but he’s easily the franchise’s biggest draft bust from the last 10 years.”

He adds, “Some might argue against this and suggest that former Vikings wide receiver (and 2016 first-round selection) Laquon Treadwell is more deserving of this title. But Treadwell and Cine actually had the same amount of total tackles in their careers with Minnesota, and only one of them played on the defensive side of the ball for a living.”

So, it might be a quick end to Cine’s NFL career. But, the way these players’ careers go, chances are if the Eagles do let him walk, another team will come knocking. We just know that team won’t be the Minnesota Vikings.
