Former Yankees Outfielder Clams Credit for Jazz Chisholm Trade

Outfielder Cameron Maybin played fifteen years in the major leagues, doing so with ten different MLB teams. He moved around a lot, played a lot, saw a lot, did a lot, and said a lot.

Now in his playing retirement, Maybin remains in the game as a broadcaster and as an outspoken social media voice. And all that speaking has seen him make a bid for a front office job, while claiming important prior experience.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Maybin publicly alluded to the idea that he played a role in facilitating the New York Yankees’ acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. The comment came in response to discussion about the team’s offseason moves, and Maybin wrote that he “had a little something to do” with the Chisholm deal, implying some direct participation.

Maybin May Have Been Exaggerating

The claim is self-reported and originates entirely from Maybin’s post, without corroborating public details or even a description of what he claims to have done. His statement implies his influence came through personal conversations rather than official front-office capacity, though he did not specify whether his involvement concerned scouting input, player outreach or general endorsement of the acquisition. Maybe he just drove Chisholm to the airport or something.

However, if Cameron Maybin wants it taken as fact, then, for the purposes of discussion, taken as fact it shall be.

Maybin spent the 2019 season with the Yankees, acquired via trade from the then-Cleveland Indians in exchange for cash in April of that year in one of the four million trades he was involved in during his career. As a Yankee that season, he appeared in 82 games, hitting .285 with a .364 on-base percentage and .494 slugging percentage, hitting 11 home runs, stealing 9 stolen bases and posted a 127 OPS+. It was one of the better seasons in an up-and-down career. He would later work as a Yankees announcer.

Chisholm’s Strong Yankees Start

Chisholm joined the Yankees in July 2024 after spending five seasons with the Miami Marlins, where he played 403 games with a .246 average, .309 on-base percentage, .440 slugging percentage and 66 home runs. His best full season with Miami came in 2023, when he hit 19 home runs and stole 22 bases, and he received a 2022 All-Star selection while still with the Marlins. Chisholm ranged from shortstop early in his development to second base and later center field, where he logged more than 1,500 innings across 2023 and 2024.

Chisholm’s first season as a Yankee was his best to date. Despite a rather embarrassing performance in the 2025 Home Run Derby, a career-best 2025 campaign saw him post 31 home runs and 31 steals on his way to a .813 OPS, a second All-Star birth and a Silver Slugger award. It makes sense that Maybin would want to take the credit for the move. It is less clear how he feels able to.

The trade that brought Chisholm to New York involved a package of players that consisted of minor league prospects Agustín Ramírez (now the Marlins’ starting catcher), Jared Serna (now their Triple-A shortstop) and Abrahan Ramírez (a utility player struggling at the A-Ball level). They gave up quality to get quality. Would they have done so without the involvement of Cameron Maybin? Perhaps we will never know. If only Cameron Maybin could speak, there would be so much he could tell us.
