Former Yankees Top Prospect Traded to White Sox

Everson Pereira is on the move again.

Three months after being acquired from the Yankees, the Rays traded the former top prospect to the White Sox on Tuesday as part of a multi-player deal.

Chicago sent pitchers Yoendrys Gomez and Steven Wilson to Tampa Bay for Pereira and minor league infielder Tanner Murray.

Pereira, 24, slashed .138/.219/.246 with two home runs and eight RBI in 65 at-bats for the Rays.

Pereira Was Prized Prospect in Deep Yankees System

Signed for $1.5 million out of Venezuela in 2017, Pereira was once considered one of baseball’s top prospects. In 2023, MLB Pipeline ranked him sixth in a deep Yankees system, behind the likes of Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells.

That same season, Pereira hit .300 with 18 homers and 64 RRI in 81 games between Double-A and Triple-A before being called up to the bigs by New York. The outfielder struggled in his brief cameo, posting a .427 OPS across 93 at-bats.

Pereira’s 2024 season was curtailed by elbow surgery.

He was traded to Tampa Bay last July for utility infielder Jose Caballero, who filled in adequately at shortstop for Volpe.

Pereira Struggled in Brief Appearance With Rays

Pereira’s struggles continued with Tampa Bay. In 23 games following the trade, Pereira slashed .138/.219/.246 with two homers and eight RBI, with his first MLB long ball coming off lefty Mitchell Parker in a 4-1 win over the Nationals on Aug. 29.

In addition to dealing Pereira, Tampa Bay designated outfielders Jake Fraley and Christopher Morel for assignment.

Pereira will now look to jumpstart his career with the White Sox, who lost over 100 games (60-102) for the third straight season. Given the makeup of Chicago’s outfield, Pereira should have ample opportunities to carve out a steady role.

Wilson, 31, went 2-2 with a 3.42 ERA and two saves in 59 relief appearances for Chicago in 2025. Gomez, 26, pitched for the White Sox, Yankees and Dodgers and was 3-3 with a 5.17 ERA in 21 outings, including nine starts.
