FOX Sports Radio Host Calls Out 49ers’ Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers showed their faith in Brock Purdy this offseason, giving him a five-year, $265 million contract with $181 million guaranteed, locking him in as their franchise quarterback through the 2030 season.

With a new contract for Purdy, FOX Sports radio host Kelvin Washington is calling out the 25-year-old, noting that with the money that San Francisco is paying him, he will have to start displaying the consistent form that saw him lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl.

“I look at Brock Purdy, and this season for me is last season was your floor,” Washington said on a recent episode of “The Odd Couple with Rob Parker and Kelvin Washington.”

“We missed guys. Guys are in, they’re out, they’re in, they’re out. Last season was the floor. A couple have been in the ceiling, getting a Super Bowl and being an MVP candidate a couple of seasons ago. If you can operate even below the MVP, but near that, we’re in a good place.”

Brock Purdy Needs to Elevate 49ers’ Talent on Offense

Last season, Purdy set his floor by completing 67.5 percent of his passes for 3,864 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Purdy’s rookie contract that paid him an average of $853,333 per season is now a thing of the past. As a result, San Francisco will need to start making financial decisions, and there will be times that Purdy will need to do what the front office gives him regarding weapons, and Washington believes he has to elevate that talent.

“It’s my job as a general manager to supply some defensive guys, to get the offensive line right, to even make these types of trades, like for Skyy Moore, and to see if we can see something,” Washington added. “Maybe you make him better than we thought.

“Maybe he comes up and gets 55, 60 catches, and we’re like, ‘All right, we didn’t see that coming.’ But to me, there’s not a lot of excuses for him to come in and have some success because you have continuity, and you know how huge that is.”

Can Brock Purdy Do What Other Elite Quarterbacks Do?

Washington used Buffalo Bills quarterback as an example of a quarterback who saw players like Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis leave and made do with what he had last season.

“I expect Brock Purdy to still come out, have success,” Washington said. “I expect last season to be the floor. He better be the much better version of that. And I don’t think there’s time for a lot of excuses because a lot of teams go through this, and their quarterbacks still show up and make the most of the situation, still find ways to win.

“Josh Allen, whole receiving corps wasn’t what it was supposed to be. Stefon Diggs, his best receiver, wasn’t doing anything. Then he gets traded. And what does he do? He goes all the way into the postseason and all the way to an MVP. So to me, Brock Purdy, you got to find a way to still make this season good, still find a way to try to get this postseason and not use any of these as excuses.”
