Frenchman Takes Control After Round 2 at the European Masters

A grueling test of endurance unfolded at Crans‑sur‑Sierre Golf Club on Friday as fog delays forced players into completing two rounds in a single day. France’s Adrien Saddier emerged as the standout performer, surging into the clubhouse lead with an astounding -13 total, featuring a bogey‑free opening round of 62 and a resilient afternoon 65 with just one blemish.

Saddier himself acknowledged the day’s toll, saying, “I’m pretty happy. It was a long day, to be honest,” Saddier said. “I got a good start this morning, the momentum was good on the first nine and then I just kept holing putts. It was a good day, and we like this kind of day. It was just nice to finish with a birdie.”

His composure under pressure in the alpine air, and through the respect‑demanding crowd of rivals; placed him firmly atop the leaderboard as the day drew to a close.

Wallace, Smith, Lawrence Lurk

Defending champion Matt Wallace delivered a strong response to the challenge, firing a 65 in the morning and an impressive 63 in the afternoon, propelling him to -12, just one stroke adrift of Saddier. Wallace reflected on his form, noting “I had three great nines, I would put it that way,” Wallace said. “The first nine this morning wasn’t very good but I managed to get it round and then I found something on the back nine.”

Hot on the heels were Jordan Smith and Thriston Lawrence, both sitting at -11 after registering consistent 66s. Smith’s round featured an eagle at the 15th and multiple birdies, while Lawrence electrified the course with an eagle at the 14th to match Smith’s tally. This tightly packed leaderboard promises an exciting weekend as group resumes continue and the field resets for the weekend rounds.

“I played really nicely this afternoon. I said to myself a few times out there today that I’m the defending champion, so let’s try to keep it that way.”

The Endurance Factor and Suspended Play

Friday’s marathon action ended with play suspended due to fading daylight, and many groups were yet to complete their second rounds; adding drama and unpredictability as the tournament unfolded into the weekend. Saturday morning’s early resumption will be critical, with players needing to pick up momentum, or counter adversity, in finishing Round 2 before launching their charge in Round 3.

The altitude and setting further magnify the challenge. Saddier’s ability to embrace these unique conditions, staying steady through both rounds, speaks volumes about his physical and mental grit today.

The weekend promises a compelling narrative. Saddier, atop by only one stroke, must navigate the pressures of leading into Round 3, defending his position amid hungry challengers like Wallace, Smith, and Lawrence.

For Wallace, the window is open for a title defense, and potentially earning a spot as one of Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup captain’s picks. As noted, the Omega European Masters is the final qualifying event before final selections, making every stroke matter greatly.

Smith and Lawrence also have much to play for; both are within striking distance and have shown their form–electrifying sequences and resilient ball-striking–that could make the difference if the lead wavers.
