Frustrated Rams HC Sean McVay Pushes for NFL Ban Amid Seahawks Controversy

The Seattle Seahawks‘ improbable overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams is arguably the game of the year so far this NFL season. Rams head coach Sean McVay is still talking about how the Seahawks won and wants to see the NFL change the league rules moving forward following Seattle’s comeback win.

During the fourth quarter, a review overturned what was initially called an incomplete pass to rule the play a fumble which resulted in the Seahawks scoring on a two-point conversion. The play tied the game at 30 with a little more than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

McVay wants to see the rule changed which allowed the Seahawks to advance the ball via a fumble recovery in the end zone following a lateral throw by Sam Darnold.

“It’s a technicality issue,” McVay told reporters on December 19, 2025, per USA Today’s Cameron DaSilva. “What they said is, ‘You can’t advance a fumble under two minutes on two-point plays or on fourth downs.’ That’s the thing. Because they said it was a backwards pass, that’s how it was able to be advanced.

“I think we would all be in agreement, and I have a total appreciation for the layers in the semantics of all the rules, especially being on the competition committee. There’s a lot of empathy and difficult spots that some of our officials and everybody’s in, but I do believe that is not something that we want in the game.”

Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald on Decision to Go For 2 Instead of Kicking Extra Point: ‘It Seems Like a Lot of Downside’

A normally positive McVay also appeared irked during his postgame press conference. It is understandable given the Rams blew a sizable 30-14 lead over the Seahawks in the fourth quarter.

The rule will continue to be debated, but Seattle running back Zach Charbonnet deserves credit for recovering the ball in the end zone despite the pass initially being ruled as incomplete. Much has been made about this two-point conversion, but it was a second two-point attempt in overtime that allowed the Seahawks to call game against the Rams.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald revealed that the team planned to go for two heading into the team’s final drive.

“Okay, so you either tie the game (and) maybe you get a three-and-out and you get a chance to go kick a field goal, or you’re going to lose the game,” Macdonald explained during a December 19, interview with Seattle Sports’ “Brock and Salk.”

“So it seems like a lot of downside. Or, hey, look, if we can maybe tilt the scales a little bit in our favor on the 2-point play, now we’re looking at an over 50% chance of winning the game. Let’s rock and roll.”

The Seahawks Have a 52% Chance to Secure the NFC’s No. 1 Seed After the Team’s Win Over the Rams

There is a reason why McVay is still heated following the Seahawks’ win over the Rams. The 12-3 Seahawks now have a one-game lead on the Rams in the NFC West and currently hold the NFC’s No. 1 seed.

The division winner is the favorite to earn a first-round bye and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. With two games remaining, Seattle has a 54% chance to win the NFC West, per The Athletic’s computer model. Additionally, the Seahawks have a 52% chance to secure the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
