Marcelo Bielsa took his anger out on a TV reporter after his Uruguay side were knocked out of the World Cup in the group stages.

Following disappointing draws with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, Uruguay needed to beat Spain in their final group game to qualify for the knockout stages.

But a 1-0 defeat, courtesy of a costly mistake from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, saw their tournament come to an end in acrimonious fashion.

Uruguay captain Federico Valverde was taken off in the second half, with the Real Madrid star furious and refusing to acknowledge Bielsa as he made his way to the bench.

And their night was summed up by Agustin Canobbio’s late red card for a wild tackle on Pau Cubarsi, with the forward raising his hands to referee Ismail Elfath’s chest when the red card was brandished.

Canobbio later returned to the pitch after full-time to continue his remonstrations, with BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce labelling the antics a ‘disgrace’.

Uruguay boss Bielsa also let his emotions get the better of him at full-time, snapping at a touchline reporter and bellowing at them to hurry up with his on-pitch interview.

Speaking later in his press conference, the former Leeds United boss took the blame for his side’s disastrous World Cup exit.

‘What do I leave for Uruguayan football? Nothing,’ Bielsa said. ‘Because any contribution that a coach might make to football in a country after three years of work never truly takes hold if results aren’t achieved.

‘Fourth place in the qualifiers didn’t count for much, and a third-place finish in the Copa America didn’t, either. And there is obviously no need to spell it out after what happened now. A tenure that left nothing behind.’

Bielsa continued: ‘Nobody wants to hear explanations. It is only natural that you don’t want explanations. You aren’t asking for an answer but you are blaming me for the outcome. That is ok.

‘If you want an explanation, which I think is not what you want, I can tell you that we deserved to win seven points and we only got two. This is the result of my management.

‘All you journalists and the Uruguayan supporters, you certainly want to blame me and I need to take the blame as that is the right thing to do.

‘We did not manage to have an acceptable ratio from the shots we attempted and the goals we scored. The goals we conceded were avoidable.’

Uruguay’s opponents, Spain, topped Group H and will play Austria or Algeria in their round-of-32 clash.

And there was history elsewhere in the group, with Cape Verde becoming the smallest nation to reach the knockout stage after a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia.

The tournament debutants now face a dream match-up against defending champions Argentina in the round of 32.
