The New York Giants were running out of running backs Monday night, but fortunately that shouldn’t be the case after their upcoming bye week.
Tyrone Tracy Jr., who left the Giants’ 33-15 loss to the New England Patriots with what looked like a potentially season-ending injury, told reporters Tuesday that he is fine.
Tracy rushed 10 times for 36 yards in New York’s seventh straight defeat, which dropped it to 2-11 for the season. But he left the game in the fourth quarter after sustaining an injury that caused him to be carted into the Giants locker room.
Devin Singletary took over from there, and he led the Giants with 68 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.
The Giants will host the Washington Commanders on Dec. 14 after their Week 14 bye.
Tyrone Tracy Has ‘A Stinger’ In His Hip
Tracy’s final carry of Monday night was a loss of two yards early in the fourth quarter. Many amateur, and professional, doctors online offered their concern since Tracy could not bear weight on his leg after taking a hit from Anfernee Jennings.
Yet, Tracy himself assuaged all fears of any long-term injury when he spoke with reporters Tuesday. According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Tracy said he has a hip contusion and stinger, neither of which is considered a season-altering injury.
Tracy seems unlikely to miss any time, mainly due to the team’s late-season bye.
Tyrone Tracy, Devin Singletary Are The Giants’ Only Running Backs Left
Of course, energetic rookie Cam Skattebo is out for the season with a dislocated ankle. Jaxson Dart, who is both Skattebo’s roommate and the team’s potential franchise quarterback, is having designed runs taken away from him, since the team is trying to keep him upright for the rest of his rookie year.
So it is incumbent on the Giants to keep Tracy healthy too. He leads New York in both attempts (113) and rushing yards (434), and his 637 scrimmage yards trail only Wan’Dale Robinson’s 830 for the team lead.
But besides Tracy’s effectiveness, he and Singletary are the only remaining RBs on the Giants roster to log a carry this season. Third-year back Eric Gray, who has 31 carries for 79 yards over his first two seasons, is still on the roster but has played just 11 special-teams snaps for the Giants this season.
Singletary has looked energized, especially over the past three weeks where he has posted at least 40 rushing yards in each game and scored three touchdowns. The 28-year-old should be even better after the bye too, since he’ll get a break from additional wear and tear during the off week.
But Singletary can’t do it alone, even with only four games left in a lost season, and you don’t want to leave the running game to Dart — since he missed two games with a concussion and has been taking huge hit after huge hit while running the ball.
Plus, the Giants still want to both play competitively and evaluate talent beyond 2025. Leaving second-year running back Dante Miller on the practice squad, and not going through the process of trying out waiver-wire backs or giving carries to Gray to potentially spell Singletary is preferable.
