What just happened? The New York Giants themselves may not know after how that game ended. Despite building a 19-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Giants fell to the Broncos 33-32, losing on a game-winning field goal as time expired.
The Broncos offense became practically unstoppable in the fourth quarter, but the Giants did a lot to beat themselves in that game, too. Kicker Jude McAtamney missed two extra points, including one after the Giants’ late go-ahead touchdown that kept the game at a two-point margin, allowing Denver to win on the aforementioned field goal. Rookie Giants QB Jaxson Dart threw a late interception deep in his own territory that gave Denver a short field down multiple scores.
But no matter how things went down, New York led 26-8 with five and a half minutes remaining and 32-30 with 30 seconds on the clock. There’s really no excuse for blowing this game, and this coaching staff may have to answer for it down the line.
New York Giants HC Brian Daboll Answers Question on Potential Staff Changes

Whenever a team suffers an embarrassing loss like this, especially a late collapse after holding a big lead, coaches will need to answer tough questions. New York HC Brian Daboll was asked about his own job security — a question he’s likely used to answering by now. But more than that, he was asked about the job status of his assistants, specifically if he was considering making changes to his coaching staff after a loss like that.
“Yeah, like I said: no, I’m not considering that,” Daboll said in his press conference on Monday. “But we all gotta do a better job. Starts with me. And there [were] plenty of opportunities to finish that game the way we wanted to and we didn’t get the job done.”
Giants DC Shane Bowen caught some particular flak for the collapse, with Giants ED Brian Burns caught on a hot mic in the tunnel after the game complaining about Bowen’s defensive playcalling. But for now, at least, Daboll is sticking by his guys.
Another Mixed Outing for New York Giants Rookie QB Jaxson Dart
While the blame for this loss can hardly be placed solely on his shoulders, Dart did have his share of struggles against the Broncos. He was just 15 of 33 passing (45 percent) for 283 yards. While he did throw three touchdown passes, he also threw that huge, momentum-swinging pick late in the game.
That’s a bit of a microcosm of the season for Dart. While he’s made huge, clutch plays and injected this Giants organization with a ton of energy, he’s been an inefficient passer down-to-down. He’s completing just over sixty percent of his passes on the season and is the eighth-lowest graded passer in football, per PFF. If you just look at passing grade, that rank drops to seventh-worst.
Still, Dart is just a rookie, and Giants fans should be thrilled with what he’s shown so far. And despite the interception, he put New York in a position to win late. That’s all you can ask.
