Giants Make Major Quarterback Decision Ahead of Packers Game

Mike Kafka is on the board with his first major decision since becoming Giants interim head coach.

New York is expected to start Jameis Winston at quarterback Sunday against the Packers, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

Rookie starter Jaxson Dart remains in concussion protocol as the team returns to practice Wednesday, making it unlikely he plays in Week 11.

Former No. 1 Pick in First Season With Giants

Winston, 31, will be making his first appearance since Week 15 of last season with the Browns. He signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants in free agency but began the season as the third-stringer behind Russell Wilson and Dart, whom New York drafted 25th overall.

With Wilson’s contract expiring, Winston is expected to serve as the backup to Dart next season.

The Giants are Winston’s third different team in three seasons and the fourth of his 11-year NFL career. The former No. 1 pick told ESPN earlier this month that he wished to stay with New York despite being the subject of trade rumors.

“When a team gives me the opportunity and believes in me, they give me a job, I want to play for that team and do my best for that team,” Winston said. “I don’t care what the record is, I don’t care what the circumstances, situation or facts is, I always say what I want for myself, I want for everyone. I’m a solutions-oriented guy, so I want to be a part of the solution. I don’t just want to run away when things get bad.”

Winston is 36-51 as a starter in his career with the Buccaneers, Saints and Browns. He was a Pro Bowler in 2015 and has thrown for 24,225 yards with 154 touchdowns and 111 interceptions over his career.

Dart Concussed in Loss to Bears

Dart sustained a concussion during the second half of Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Bears. He was replaced by Wilson, who was 3 for 7 for 45 yards and was sacked twice.

The Giants blew a 10-point fourth quarter lead and lost for the fourth straight week, falling to 2-8 overall (0-6 on the road).

Daboll was fired Monday amid his third consecutive losing season. Despite winning NFL Coach of the Year in 2022, he finished his Giants tenure with a record of just 20-40-1.

Kafka, who had been serving as the team’s offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, replaces him.
