Giants Poach Jets Draft Pick From Browns on Waivers

A former New York Jets draft pick is on the move.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero shared on social media that the New York Giants claimed defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns claimed tight end Brenden Bates off waivers on Monday, October 27. In a corresponding roster move, they waived Bernard-Converse.

Interesting that those moves both featured former members of the Jets in Bates and JBC.

Jets Didn’t Want to Lose Bernard-Converse

The former LSU product entered the league as the No. 204 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Bernard-Converse, 25, spent his first two seasons with the Jets. This offseason, he was waived ahead of final roster cuts after being with the team through training camp.

Bernard-Converse isn’t a vested veteran, which means the other 31 teams in the NFL had a chance to claim him. NFL analyst Will Parkinson revealed that if Bernard-Converse had cleared waivers in August, the Jets wanted him back on the practice squad.

They never got the chance.

Cleveland claimed him on waivers. He was the only member of the Jets who had been claimed on waivers during final roster cuts, per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.

When a player gets claimed by another team, there are two schools of thought. The Jets made a mistake getting rid of a player that someone else was interested in. Or their team is so talented and deep that they had no choice but to watch some of their depth get vultured by other teams.

Bernard-Converse appeared in five games for the Browns this season, but participated in only five defensive snaps. He didn’t play much on special teams either, registering just 29 snaps.

The Giants Are Obsessed With Former Jets Players

Gang Green might want to consider filing a restraining order.

Bernard-Converse is the fourth former Jet to join the Giants’ 53-man roster. That group also includes cornerback Korie Black, linebacker Neville Hewitt, and offensive lineman Greg Van Roten.

The Giants also have former Jets draft pick, linebacker Zaire Barnes, on their practice squad.

Mariah Carey wrote a song called “Obsessed” in 2009. A fitting description for the Giants’ love affair with players who, at one point or another, donned the green and white.

It’s getting weird, man.

Some Long Overdue Love for a Jets Home Run

The offensive line isn’t sexy. You normally only talk about any individual in the trenches for a bad reason: insert name got a penalty, or someone gave up a sack.

You rarely hear when offensive linemen do well. That is especially true when a team isn’t winning a lot of games.

So it was refreshing to see the spotlight get pointed at Jets rookie offensive tackle Armand Membou.

“Drafted with the No. 7 pick, Membou assumed a starting role in OTAs, and he hasn’t looked back while playing every offensive snap. He is excelling as a run blocker, ranking seventh out of 63 qualified tackles in run block win rate. Membou has had some hiccups in pass protection (39th in pass block win rate), but he hasn’t looked out of place. He is a steady rookie with a high ceiling,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote.
