Giants QB Russell Wilson’s Job Just Got Harder

The New York Giants have a lot of work ahead of them for the 2025-26 season, not that it should be a scary thing, because every team in the NFL has hard work ahead. But, for the Giants, it’s time to put that 3-14 2024 season behind them and look to the future.

Even though the team still has the same head coach in Brain Daboll, pretty much nothing else going into the new season is the same. That’s especially true when looking at the quarterback room. The New York Giants have veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, rookie Jaxson Dart and hometown player Tommy DeVito in their quarterback lineup.

It’s widely believed that Wilson will be the starting quarterback for the 2025-26 season and that Dart will eventually become the team’s franchise quarterback in the future. But, judging by some new stats, Wilson will really have his work cut out for him. Even an excellent quarterback needs the right support around him, and that may be a factor with Wilson and the entire Giants team.

Giants Have a Playmakers Situation

Wilson’s job will be a lot easier if he has good playmakers around him. In a feature for ESPN published on Tuesday, July 8, NFL expert Bill Barnwell names the best playmakers in the NFL, and he gives his thoughts on the New York Giants.

Unfortunately, he has the Giants at No. 26 on the tally. So, they’re in the bottom one-third of teams for playmakers.

He starts with the good, stating that “Malik Nabers lived up to the hopes of Giants fans last season, overcoming dismal quarterback play to rack up 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie.” He adds, though, that “Nabers had drop issues, including a late whiff that would have put the Giants in position to beat the Commanders in September, but he was easily the most dynamic receiver the organization has put on the field since the early days of Odell Beckham Jr.”

With a solid quarterback in the lineup, Barnwell thinks Nabers could have a better year two. But, he says that aside from Nabers, the Giants don’t have a ton out there.

“Darius Slayton’s ability to win deep has been marginalized in an offense that didn’t often throw deep with Daniel Jones,” he says, “and the veteran averaged just 1.2 yards per route run last season.”

The New York Giants’ Secondary

The Giants’ secondary is also note stellar. In a story published on Tuesday, July 8, for PFF, John Kosko names the best secondaries in the NFL.

He has the Giants at No. 24, so slightly better than the playmakers ranking but not much. “The Giants’ two highest-graded secondary players in 2024 were rookies: cornerback Andru Phillips and safety Tyler Nubin,” he notes in the piece. “To bolster a secondary that has struggled for several years, the team signed safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo this offseason.”

But, the good news is that “if the young players continue to develop and the new additions maintain their strong play, this unit could emerge as a surprise in 2025,” Kosko says.

It may be another growing year for the Giants, but let’s hope they surprise everyone and make it a true comeback season.
