Giants Reveal Stance on Trading for Malik Nabers’ Replacement: Insider

The New York Giants won the game in Week 4, but they also lost star wide receiver Malik Nabers to a season-ending knee injury, causing WR trade rumors to swirl in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

On October 1, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler provided an update on the idea of the Giants pursuing a wide receiver trade in order to replace Nabers, reaching out to sources inside the NYG organization. And the answer was a pretty firm, not interested, at this time.

When I asked about the Giants making a move to add a receiver via trade or free agency, the response I got was, ‘There are no replacements for Malik Nabers. You can’t replace that guy,’” Fowler reported ahead of Week 5.

Adding: “Very true. So the Giants seem inclined to roll with what they have at this point.

Giants Work Out WR Ahead of Week 5, Supporting Fowler’s Latest on Trade Rumors

The latest Giants news on the wide receiver front certainly supports Fowler’s update. On October 1, New York Daily News beat reporter Pat Leonard relayed the following.

Source: The Giants are working out free agent wide receiver Samori Toure on Friday. Toure, 27, has 13 career catches for 160 yards and a touchdown in 22 games played. New York [is] exploring WR options with Malik Nabers (torn ACL) done for the season.”

All of Toure’s NFL appearances came with the Green Bay Packers from 2022 through 2023, and he has not suited up for an active roster since.

Needless to say, this is not some sort of big-name inquiry that the Giants are making at wide receiver, and if they’re “exploring” additions like Toure, then Fowler’s October 1 reporting on trade rumors is likely accurate.

The Wednesday transaction log should tell us if Toure was the lone WR tryout ahead of Week 5, or if the Giants took a look at anyone else that has yet to be reported.

Injury & Surgery Update Emerges for Giants Star Malik Nabers

GettyThe latest on New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers’ knee injury and surgery.

There was also an injury update on Nabers on October 1, via The Athletic’s NYG beat reporter Dan Duggan.

Giants WR Malik Nabers suffered a partially torn lateral meniscus in addition to the torn ACL in his right knee, per source,” Duggan reported on Wednesday.

Don’t be alarmed, because Duggan then noted that this is “common with ACL tears and shouldn’t add any time to Nabers’ recovery timeline.”

“The meniscus will likely be repaired when he undergoes the ACL reconstruction surgery,” the reporter explained. Concluding: “The good news is there’s no other damage to the knee. Nabers will likely undergo surgery within the next week or two.”

Along with the update on Nabers, Duggan also relayed the following from Wednesday’s practice.

“[Head coach Brian] Daboll said RB Tyrone Tracy (shoulder), RG Greg Van Roten (vet day) and DT Dexter Lawrence (illness) won’t practice today,” he reported. “Daboll said they don’t expect to start the clocks to return for any players on IR/PUP (Josh Ezeudu, Victor Dimukeje, Rico Payton) this week.”

On Tracy, Duggan added that “Tracy worked on the side with trainers.” And that “[Tracy] was joined by safety Tyler Nubin, who was in-and-out late in Sunday’s game. Nubin was wearing a sleeve on his right leg.”

As usual, it’s only Week 5 and the Giants‘ medical staff is plenty busy.
