Giants Urged to Turn to Jameis Winston if Jaxson Dart Can’t Return vs. Packers

The New York Giants are going to look a little bit different when they take the field against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Head coach Brian Daboll, fired Monday, won’t be on the sideline for Big Blue.

Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator turned interim head coach, will be leading New York in the wake of Daboll’s departure.

There may even be a new quarterback under center, with Jaxson Dart in concussion protocol following some massive hits suffered throughout the team’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

Veteran Russell Wilson came in relief of the injured rookie in Chicago, but was unable to get anything going offensively, unable to find paydirt from the Bears’ own seven-yard line.

If Dart can’t go on Sunday, should the Giants turn to their other veteran quarterback on the roster?

Mike Florio Says Giants Should Turn to Jameis Winston

Mike Florio, host of Pro Football Talk and contributor for NBC Sports, made the case for the New York Giants to pivot from Wilson to Winston.

“If starter Jaxson Dart isn’t cleared to return from a concussion he suffered on Sunday in a loss to the Bears, Jameis Winston should get the start in Week 11 against the Packers,” wrote Florio.

“With all due respect to Russell Wilson, the Giants need a spark. They need hope. And, if all else fails, they need some fun.”

Winston certainly provides some more upside at this point in their careers, as Wilson did little to inspire confidence in his short New York tenure.

In his three starts, the former Seattle Seahawk completed 58% of his passes for 831 yards, along with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

He was benched after the Giants’ Week 3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, paving the way for Dart to take over as the starter.

With New York out of playoff contention and having an interim head coach, what do they have to lose seeing Winston under center while Dart recovers?

Jameis Winston, Beloved Giant

ESPN insider Jordan Raanan reported last week that the New York Giants intend to hang onto Winston as Dart’s backup for the 2026 season.

General manager Joe Schoen preferred to keep the former No. 1 overall pick at the trade deadline, understanding his importance as a mentor to the rookie quarterback.

“‘He’s like a coach on the field [and] in the film room,’ Dart said,” via Ranaan.

Since Winston is in the team’s plans for the future, it would make sense that they would give him a chance to show what he’s got in the tank for a game or two.

In 12 games for the Cleveland Browns last season, the Florida State product threw for 2121 yards and completed 61.1% of his passes.

He also threw for 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, which is the quintessential Winston experience.

He’s not the safest quarterback, but his energy and presence under center could provide some juice to a team that lacks it without Dart.

We’ll have to wait and see how the 25th overall pick in last April’s draft progresses in concussion protocol before Kafka makes his decision later in the week.
