Giants WR Sends Strong Message to Tommy DeVito About NFL Future

Perhaps Tommy DeVito won’t be on the roster for the New York Giants this season, but one of the team’s wide receivers sent a strong message to the backup quarterback with a cult following about his future in the NFL.

The message comes from slot receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who told reporters, including ESPN’s Jordan Raanan on Sunday, August 24, why DeVito still has a career in the pros. As Robinson put it, “There is plenty of tape out there that shows he can play in this league.”

DeVito’s latest tape will show him throwing three touchdown passes during the recent 42-10 demolition of the New England Patriots in preseason. Those scoring strikes were part of a timely audition for DeVito, who is likely to be looking for a new team with the Giants seemingly set at football’s most important position.

Giants Can Risk Losing Tommy DeVito

He’s a popular figure thanks to a six-start run in 2023 when DeVito posted a 3-3 record. The former undrafted free agent out of Illinois was 0-2 last season, but the player dubbed Tommy ‘Cutlets’ by some retained a faithful following as a pop culture star of sorts.

DeVito’s value to the Giants went deeper than fanfare when he proved an able backup, but Big Blue are now stocked with better talent in the quarterback room. The depth chart is led by 10-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson, who will start ahead of 2015 NFL draft No. 1 pick Jameis Winston and this year’s first-rounder Jaxson Dart.

Investments in this more high-profile trio make DeVito surplus to requirements, but he should have no trouble catching on with a new team. Not after the way he showed out against the Patriots, with his best plays highlighted by ESPN Australia & NZ.

DeVito will be one of the first names considered by any quarterback-needy team. If he leaves the Giants, DeVito will do so with Robinson’s best wishes, but the latter needs to focus more on redefining his own role within this season’s passing game.

Wan’Dale Robinson Facing Uphill Battle

What Robinson must do is show he’s more than an inside and underneath receiver. Especially when QB1 Wilson is favoring different receivers and areas of the field.

Robinson’s problem stems from an inability to stretch the field, both inside the numbers and on the perimeter. The 2022 second-round pick wants more opportunities to attack coverage vertically, according to Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic.

Those opportunities will be there since Wilson is still one of the most talented deep throwers in the NFL, but he has more suitable targets than Robinson. Wideouts like Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton will remain ahead of Robinson in the pecking order, but the Giants still need the 24-year-old after ditching a training camp star as part of the first wave of roster cuts.

There’s a paucity of proven commodities at the position, so much so the Giants are encouraged to revisit the idea of signing a favorite a of head coach Brian Daboll. In the meantime, receiver will remain a threadbare group, but things are different at quarterback, where DeVito is the odd man out.
