Gunther Sounds Off on WWE Fans’ John Cena Hypocrisy

The WWE Universe was unhappy after Gunther made John Cena tap out in his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13. The reaction to his loss was felt inside the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., as well as on social media.

Gunther recently appeared on TMZ’s Inside The Ring podcast and discussed the match against The GOAT. He called out WWE fans for their reaction, explaining how hypocritical it was for them to be angry at him when they were so sick of Cena for a long time, more than a decade ago.

“He was a babyface, but he went out there and he got booed everywhere he went. People complained that he got shoved down their throats and whatever. And here we are 10, 15 years later and people act like it never happened, and the situation never existed. Now they all love him. Bit hypocritical if you ask me. But that’s what the fans are. Whatever is the flavor of the month, they jump on it,” Gunther said, via WrestlePurists.

Before Roman Reigns, Cena was the most polarizing WWE Superstar in the world. Many were asking for him to turn heel or evolve his character, but the company insisted on him staying as The Cenation Leader.

Nevertheless, the reaction to his loss and retirement meant that he was a beloved legend regardless of what some fans thought about him at the peak of his career.

Gunther Has Nuclear Heat

Based on how the fans reacted at Saturday Night’s Main Event, WWE has turned Gunther into one of its biggest heels in recent memory. John Cena’s supporters were so upset that The Ring General needed security to get on his bus after the event because people were trying to confront him.

A couple of days later on WWE RAW, Gunther was booed out of the building in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He played to the crowd so well that the boos got even louder and louder. He was eventually given the rest of the night off by general manager Adam Pearce.

WWE also appeared to tease his next target, AJ Styles, who was waiting for Gunther in the parking lot. Styles is set to retire next year, and the former World Heavyweight Champion could add another legend to his resume.

Cena Signs New WWE Contract

Despite losing his final match against Gunther, John Cena will remain part of the WWE family. Cena is no longer an active in-ring performer, but he signed a new five-year contract to stay with the company as an ambassador.

“I will be an ambassador to WWE. I’m already signed on for another five years. ‘Please, as long as you can do it. I would like to be in this family as an employee, as a contributing part for as long as I can,’” Cena said in an interview with Tom Rinaldi last week, via Sports Illustrated.

The GOAT has been with WWE since 2000, starting his career at Ohio Valley Wrestling. He was called up to the main roster in 2002 and received his big push in 2005. He was the face of the company for more than a decade before becoming a part-timer in 2017 to start his Hollywood career.
