Manchester United are concerned Matheus Cunha might be ‘put off’ a move to the club after they missed out on a Champions League spot.

The Red Devils are planning to trigger the Wolves star’s £64m release clause and bring the Brazilian playmaker to Old Trafford this summer.

It was thought that Cunha was keen to play in the Champions League but United were unable to qualify after losing this year’s Europa League final.

According to Sky Sports, though, United’s pursuit of Cunha will not be affected by the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday.

It is thought that Cunha is still happy to join United because he believes that they are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

United head coach Ruben Amorim is excited to welcome Cunha to Old Trafford and feels his side are signing a ‘perfect’ player for a ‘fair price’.

Cunha has been in fine form for Wolves this season, producing 15 goals and six assists across 32 Premier League games.

The 25-year-old mainly operates as an attacking midfielder but can also be deployed as a second striker, centre-forward, left winger and right winger.

Cunha has been at Wolves since 2023, arriving from Atletico Madrid, playing a total of 91 games for them to date with 33 goals and 15 assists.

He has been capped 13 times by Brazil and now looks set for a switch to United with a deal almost agreed ahead of the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer has urged United to complete a ‘bargain’ transfer once they have officially wrapped up the deal for Cunha.

‘They’re going to need another six or seven players on top of that,’ Shearer told Betfair.

‘United are going to need more than him (Cunha), but he’ll be a welcome addition, absolutely.

‘They have also been linked with (Ipswich Town striker) Liam Delap. But one or the other? They need to sign both.

‘They need a top-class centre-forward like Delap, but they need someone like Cunha as well. They need players defensively as well – all around the pitch they need reinforcements.

‘Whether they can go out and spend that much, I don’t know. I’ve read that there’s about a £30m release clause for Liam Delap, which means that someone is going to get a real bargain in that.

‘It isn’t a lot of money for a centre-forward with big potential, like he has. He’ll have tons of options, Delap will. When you look at all the clubs who need a centre-forward in the Premier League – Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool, Spurs – there’ll be huge clubs all looking at Delap.

‘There’s no doubt, if it is that amount of money, then he will have big options.’
