Naomi Osaka Talks Final Against Mboko

Following a Round of 32 exit at Wimbledon and a Round of 16 exit at the Mubadala Citi DC Open late last month, Naomi Osaka entered the National Bank Open eager to win her second title of the year.

In the first round of the National Bank Open, Osaka picked up a straight-set win, setting the stage for a deep run that’s seen her eliminate No. 13-seeded Liudmilla Samsonova, No. 22-seeded Jelena Ostapenko, No. 10-seeded Elina Svitolina, and No. 16-seeded Clara Tauson.

Following Wednesday’s straight-set win over Tauson, Osaka spoke about her upcoming final against Mboko during her on-court interview, saying:

“She’s Canadian, I heard the applause from inside there, so I’m pretty sure it’s going to be super lively but I really appreciate that because it means you guys are invested in the match, but I hope like one or two people cheer for me too.”

Osaka heads into today’s match ranked No. 24 in the world on the WTA live rankings.

With a win, she will capture just her third Masters 1000 title after previously winning Indian Wells in 2018, and the China Open  in 2019.

Victoria Mboko Talks National Bank Open Final

As Naomi Osaka indicated, many fans will be cheering for Victoria Mboko when the two take Centre Court on Thursday.

At just 18-years-old, Mboko, who was raised in Toronto, has quickly become a fan favorite in Montreal.

Prior to receiving a wildcard entry into this year’s National Bank Open, Mboko was expecting to pursue her sixth ITF title of the year this week. Instead, she wound up going on a sensational run that’s seen her defeat three former Grand Slam champs en route to her first Masters 1000 final.

While speaking during her on-court interview following Wednesday’s win over Elena Rybakina, Mboko spoke about her week so far, and the final ahead:

“Anything can happen.  … I had everyone supporting me and pushing me through. Without you guys, I don’t think I would’ve been able to pull this through.”

With her semifinal win on Wednesday, Mboko is now up to No. 34 on the WTA Live rankings.

With Mboko looking to continue her climb up the WTA rankings, and Osaka looking to win her first Masters 1000 title in over five years, the stakes couldn’t be higher for either player.
