Things have not been going according to plan in the 2216. The Cleveland Cavaliers, after going 64-18 a year ago, sit at 15-14 following a third straight loss to a team with a losing record.
As the losses continue to pile up amidst the surprising skid, questions are being asked about the future. Fans have been booing the team on a nightly basis. The current core of the team may be split up some time down the line. And of course, some deals will be made in the near future.
In a fan-proposed trade, the Sacramento Kings would land De’Andre Hunter from the Cavs. In exchange, they would send a pair of guards over in a move that works salary-wise.
Second-year guard Devin Carter, and Dennis Schroder be headed to Cleveland to try and improve things on a team with an imploding bench.
Why Trading De’Andre Hunter Makes Sense for Cavs
The De’Andre Hunter that the Cavs have seen this year does not match the one they acquired from Atlanta Hawks at last year’s deadline.
His efficiency has been way down, going from 42% from 3PT, down to just 30% this season. With that in mind, it would absolutely make sense to consider moving on from the veteran forward.
His lack of production, combined with the $24 million per year salary makes keeping him a tough decision. Considering how cash-strapped the organization is, they need to find some way to spread the books. And this could be a guy that needs new scenery again.
Bringing in a veteran guard like Dennis Schroder could certainly help the second unit. This is a guy that has had some major games with every team he has been on. A change of pace guard that can also provide veteran leadership, along with playmaking.
Just last night, Schroder sunk the game-winning three to stun the Houston Rockets in overtime.
The journeyman is a huge deal with Germany, helping to deliver a 2025 EuroCup title to his home country.
As for Devin Carter, he has gotten limited run during his time in Sacramento. Between injuries and the stacked guard rotation, the second-year guard hasn’t been able to do much.
Carter had 15 points and four assists the last time he got regular playing time, against the Denver Nuggets a few weeks ago. He seems to be one of those guys that need NBA minutes, and would be too good for the G-League.
Projecting New Roles for Traded Players
In Cleveland, Dennis Schroder would probably be the first guard off the bench. Pairing with Donovan Mitchell could make for a solid veteran duo. Playing off the ball with Darius Garland as well may work nicely.
As for Carter, he would likely play a limited role, but could continue to learn a lot by being around All-Stars on a daily basis.
Over in Sacramento, Hunter would be a fixture in the starting lineup. A proven scorer in the midst of a long slump, this fit could certainly be a good one. Sometimes, a change of scenery is what it takes to bust out of a cold streak.
At just 28 years of age, this is somebody that could be a part of the next phase for the Kings.
