I was doing Cole Palmer’s celebration years before Chelsea star – here’s where it really comes from

COLE PALMER has become synonymous with his “cold” celebration, where he wraps his arms around his body as if he were cold.

The Chelsea star first did the celebration back in December 2023 when he scored in a 3-2 win over Luton.

But Valencia striker Diego Lopez has said he has been doing it for years before that[/caption]

Since then he has chalked up 39 goals on his Chelsea tally, with the celebration coming out almost every time.

Palmer, 22, has made no secret about the celebration not being his own original work.

He previously admitted how, following his time in the Manchester City academy, he was inspired to perform the celebration by then team-mate Morgan Rogers.

Aston Villa star Rogers was accused of copying the celebration when he scored against Chelsea in April 2024, before he clarified: “It’s the opposite, I did it first, he copied me.”

Palmer responded by saying: “Rogers knows that I did it and that it went viral. He [Rogers] may have done it, but everyone knows it’s my celebration.”

In December 2024, SunSport exclusively revealed how Palmer had launched a bid to patent the “cold” celebration.

However, the true origin of the move dates back years, and even outside of football.

Valencia ace Diego Lopez was asked about the celebration after scoring his fourth goal in a row, something he has done since before he joined the Spanish club in 2023.

Lopez, 22, was not too happy about the news of Palmer patenting the move and responded on social media by sharing a photo of him doing the cold move, captioned with the year 2022 and a set of emojis.

After scoring again for Valencia and using the celebration, he told Relevo: “The receipt has not arrived yet, I don’t know if it is because they do not have my address or because Valencia is in charge of it.

“If you want, I can explain that I have been doing that for four years now.

“I will continue to celebrate like this because I like it and I hope I celebrate it a lot because that will mean that I am scoring a lot of goals.”

However, Lopez has also revealed his own origin for the move, which actually comes from basketball star Trae Young.

He explained: “He’s a player that I particularly like. When he scores an important basket or wins a key game, he celebrates it like this. I liked it and I copied it a bit.”

Even Atalanta Hawks star Young has heard of Palmer using the celebration.

But the 26-year-old Point Guard told talkSPORT his prompt for the move came from his childhood.

He said: “I remember being in the basement of the house with my friends watching games of our favourite players making gestures. I said, ‘We have to invent something.’

“One of my friends replied, ‘You’re Ice Trae. Be cold as ice.’

“I remember that I made a three-pointer, I don’t know if it was to win a game or not, but I did it and since then I adopted it. I didn’t get it from anyone.”

Regardless of its original source, the celebration has become popular worldwide.

Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo used the move at last summer’s Paris Olympics, while New York Yankees baseball player Gleyber Torres and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson have both used the “cold” celebration.

Other football stars including ex-Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi have also used the celebration.
