The New York Knicks, at least for now, have usurped the Los Angeles Lakers at the center of the NBA world. On October 7th, reports emerged that the Knicks were the only team Giannis Antetokounmpo would consider being traded to.
Of course, the Lakers could make moves of their own to add a superstar not named Giannis, although the Greek Freak will always be the hottest name on the trade market.
Even LeBron James, the NBA’s GOAT, wouldn’t command as much interest as Antetokounmpo. James has been interested in playing for the Knicks since his first ‘decision,’ and could end his career in the Big Apple.
The only thing standing in his way? The Knicks’ interest in adding him.

Trade Speculation Links LeBron James to Knicks
If the Knicks are interested in adding a burly, strong, established forward like Antetokounmpo, why not add James?
After all, James made the All-NBA Second Team last season and wouldn’t require a massive package from the Knicks to acquire. James is no stranger to trade rumors and might not be long for Los Angeles.
“If you’re LeBron, the two places you’d go are probably Cleveland or the Knicks,” said Bill Simmons on a October 8th episode of his self-titled podcast. “You’d come home to Cleveland and finish your career, or you’d go to the Knicks, where you should have probably gone in 2010, try to chase a title.”
Matching James’ $52.6 million salary is tough, especially for the Knicks. On top of that, his career timeline doesn’t line up with the Knicks’ aspirations of competing well beyond this season.
New York Knicks Have No Interest in LeBron James
Even if the Knicks could give up a single one of their stars, like OG Anunoby, and balance James’ salary, doing so would be a shot in the foot for New York.
No one would argue that Anunoby is better than James or contributes more to winning, but he 12 years younger than James. In short, he would not fit any timeline the Knicks have in mind.
“That would be insane,” said Ariel Helwani of any deal that would send James to New York. “If they give up a guy like Anunoby for him, even one-for-one would be insane. That makes no sense.”
James’ trade value, between his massive salary, age, and limited team control, has never been lower. If he wants out of Los Angeles, he will have to be patient.
“I just think LeBron stuck with the Lakers and he’s going to eventually realize that, and be like, ‘Alright, I’m on Luka’s team. Now I’ll figure this out,’” finished Simmons.
James is still an elite player, but unlike Giannis, he isn’t worth breaking the bank.
