Insider Gives Major Update on Maple Leafs Rumored Interest in 22-Goal Scorer

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked to Jack Roslovic, but that no longer appears to be the case.

Roslovic was rumored to sign with the Maple Leafs this summer, as Toronto looked to add more secondary scoring to the lineup. However, NHL insider Chris Johnston said on his ‘Chris Johnston Show’ on SDPN that it’s unlikely Toronto will add Roslovic.

“I don’t see the Leafs as being as much a fit right now, just cause if anything, they have too many forwards in camp,” Johnston said about Roslovic. “They’re probably facing a scenario at some point before getting into the season where a forward or maybe two are on the move somewhere.  It could just be through waivers, could be being sent down to the American Hockey League. But I don’t see them necessarily being in an adding position this moment.”

As Johnston notes, Toronto has an excess of forwards, so adding another one in Roslovic doesn’t make sense for the Maple Leafs.

Roslovic is coming off a one-year, $2.8 million deal with the Carolina Hurricanes. He recorded 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 points in 81 games last season, showing he can still add some offense.

Maple Leafs GM Wasn’t Ruling Out Making More Moves

Toronto has started training camp and preseason games, as the Maple Leafs have plenty of camp competition for roster spots.

The likes of Nick Robertson, Easton Cowan, Calle Jarnkrok, and David Kampf are all competing for a roster spot in camp. However, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said he’s keeping his options open to add more talent to the roster.

“We’re always looking. I don’t think you ever stop,” Treliving said to Sportsnet. “Whether it happens or not, we’ll see. We’ve got a lot of bodies right now, so we’ll see. More than likely, unless something changes, we’ll go with what we’ve got and see where it all sorts itself out.”

The Maple Leafs still have just under $2 million in cap space, so they could still add someone if needed.

But, for now, it appears Toronto won’t be adding someone like Roslovic as the Maple Leafs are committed to their current group.

Roslovic is Hoping for Multi-Year Deal

Although Roslovic remains unsigned, he remains hopeful of getting a multi-year deal.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic says Roslovic is looking for a multi-year deal. He has also changed his agent as he remains unsigned.

“I do believe there was an offer from the Edmonton Oilers at some point, but Roslovic, 28, turned it down,” LeBrun wrote. “He has since switched agents. He’s now with Justin Duberman. Roslovic made $2.8 million on a one-year deal in Carolina last season. Word is he’d like to get term on his next deal — more than one year. That may not be easy to do this late into things, with teams mostly filled out. But we’ll see.”

Not only does LeBrun say Roslovic turned down a deal from the Oilers, but he has also been linked to the Maple Leafs. But it appears Edmonton and Toronto have both turned the page and are unlikely to bring him in.
