The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have carved out an impressive six-game stretch to start the 2025 NFL season, with Baker Mayfield and company sporting a record of 5-1 heading into Week 7’s matchup with the Detroit Lions.
Not only has it been impressive that Todd Bowles‘ squad has won five out of its first six games, but they’ve also been doing it against tough competition while dealing with several injuries, especially on the offensive side of the football.
In Week 7, the competition only gets tougher for the resilient Buccaneers, with the team going on the road to face an NFC heavyweight. Tampa Bay will travel to Ford Field in hopes of taking down Jared Goff and the Lions in a matchup that could very well be an NFC Championship Game preview.
Fortunately for the Buccaneers, the team might get a boost in the passing game in Week 7, with star wide receiver Mike Evans potentially trending in the right direction.
Crucial Update on Buccaneers Star WR Mike Evans

Even though the Buccaneers have been one of the best teams in the NFL through the first six weeks of the 2025 campaign, Tampa Bay has been able to keep its offense firing on all cylinders without Evans, who has only played three games due to a hamstring injury.
However, the emergence of rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka has overshadowed Evans’ absence, as he has been arguably the best offensive rookie in the year up to this point. Unfortunately, Egbuka suffered a hamstring injury in Week 6, which will put him on the shelf for some time.
Even though the team will be without Egbuka and still have Chris Godwin on the mend, there’s a chance Evans could be back in the mix against the Lions, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
The Bucs are going on second- and third-string receivers due to injury, but Mike Evans (hamstring) will give it a go in practice this week with hopes of playing Monday against Detroit. Evans has missed three games and had hoped to avoid a fourth. It’s worth noting that he is tied with Jerry Rice for most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons (11). If he’s back this week, he has 11 games to get from 140 to 1,000.
Obviously, this is good news for the Buccaneers, even though he could still end up missing a fourth straight game. Along with keeping Tampa Bay in title contention in the NFC, he has the motivation to break Jerry Rice’s record, which is likely driving him moving forward.
Baker Mayfield Continues Going Strong in MVP Campaign

Although it initially seemed like a stretch that Mayfield would be in the NFL MVP conversation, the Buccaneers star is generating a lot of buzz to win the regular-season award after an incredible start to the season, as he’s being mentioned in the same breath as Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.
Even with the injuries piling up for the Buccaneers, Mayfield has been as resilient as any quarterback in the league, leading his squad to wins every week.
Through the first six games of the season, Mayfield has thrown for 1,539 yards (4th in the NFL), 12 touchdowns (tied for 3rd) and only one interception. As long as he can keep putting up numbers while limiting the turnovers and winning games, he could emerge as the favorite to be the league’s next MVP.
