A looming New York Jets contract situation is a subplot to the 2025 season.
NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY first brought it up on “Jets Final Drive” on Monday, September 8.
“Quinnen Williams is one that the Jets might want to take care of pretty soon because he is out of guaranteed money on his contract next year. He has been the quintessential leader and soldier for this team, doing everything right. A dominant, dominant force in the middle of their defense… take care of the guy, like adjust the contract, add some more guaranteed money, something like that. He is a guy in Quinnen that you want to keep happy,” Hughes explained.
A few days later, on the “Jets Mailbag” digital show on SNY, Hughes again carved out time to talk about Williams’ looming contract situation.
“Quinnen Williams, who we have not talked about often, has no guaranteed money left on his contract. Yeah, Quinnen Williams is going to need a new deal; he is going to need a new contract. That is another guy who is going to demand a lot of money,” Hughes added.
The #Jets have a looming contract situation with Quinnen Williams. @Connor_J_Hughes first brought this up w/ @ZackBlatt saying, ‘he’s out of guaranteed money on his contract next year.’
He told @JeaneCoakley, ‘Quinnen Williams is going to need a new deal.’

An Inside Look at Williams’ Contract With the Jets
Williams, 27, has two years remaining on his $96 million contract through the 2027 season.
According to Over The Cap, Williams only has $5 million guaranteed left on his contract beyond the 2025 season.
When the former Alabama product signed his contract, it was the largest overall deal by value and the largest in average annual value in franchise history.
Both of those figures have since been surpassed by wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who signed a $130 million deal that pays him $32.5 million per year.
Williams Still Holds a Respectable Place in the DT Market
Some positions in the NFL marketplace have blown up; defensive tackle is not one of them.
Williams was paid in July 2023. At the time of his signing, Williams was the second-highest-paid defensive tackle in football ($24 million per year), per Spotrac.
Fast forward two years, and Williams is now tied as the sixth-highest paid DT in the NFL, per Over The Cap.
Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs is the outlier in the market, making $31.75 million per year. However, the gap between the second-highest-paid DT ($26 million per year) and the 15th ($20 million per year) is just $6 million.
In other words, the Jets won’t have to reset the market to take care of Williams.
The Jets Have a Straw That Stirs the Drink
Williams has been everything the Jets could have hoped for when he was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft.
He has displayed a ceiling as one of the best defensive tackles in football as a former first-team All-Pro. However, what has been most impressive is his floor. Williams has registered at least 5.5 sacks in five straight seasons heading into 2025.
Before the 2025 season, Williams was voted one of six team captains on the Jets by his teammates.
This is the type of player you want to make a Jet for life.
