Insider Tabs Super Bowl Winning Head Coach as ‘Perfect Marriage’ for Giants

For the fifth time since firing legendary coach Tom Coughlin, the New York Giants will be on the market for a new head coach.

Brian Daboll was let go on Monday morning after losing in humiliating fashion to the Chicago Bears 24-20.

It was the fourth time this season New York blew a 10-point lead en route to a loss.

General manager Joe Schoen appears safe for now, with Giants ownership declaring he will lead the search for the franchise’s next head coach.

But what should Big Blue be looking for in their next leader?

The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor has a pretty good idea, and he deemed it to be the “perfect marriage” for the Giants.

That is, if this head coach happens to become available at season’s end.

Ian O’Connor Tabs Mike Tomlin as Brian Daboll Replacement

O’Connor named Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as the ideal candidate for the New York Giants coaching job.

“The Steelers coach has ripped off 18 consecutive non-losing seasons (15 of them winning seasons) and is working on No. 19,” wrote O’Connor.

“He is a card-carrying tough guy and a two-time Super Bowl participant and one-time champ who would be a human firewall against the disastrous seasons the Giants regularly serve up to their paying customers.”

While on the surface it seems like a perfect pairing, Tomlin is still under contract in Pittsburgh for at least two more seasons, meaning New York would have to hope the Steelers fire their longtime coach or trade for his services.

The most recent head coach trade was when Sean Payton came out of retirement to coach for the Denver Broncos in 2023, who had to send the New Orleans Saints draft capital to facilitate the hiring.

Denver sent New Orleans the Broncos’ 2023 first-round pick and 2024 second-round pick in exchange for Payton and a 2024 third-round pick from the Saints.

Would the Giants do the same, considering they already have several foundational players in place?

For a team desperate for leadership on the sideline and a fast track back to winning ways, it feels like no price would be too steep for New York to land a coach like Tomlin.

Are Mike Tomlin and the Steelers on the Outs?

Would the Pittsburgh Steelers part ways with their second-winningest coach in franchise history?

In the NFL, the answer is never 100% no.

Yes, Tomlin has never had a losing season in his entire coaching career, but as of late, Pittsburgh has been devoid of any and all postseason success.

Tomlin’s Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016, and the heat on Tomlin’s seat grows a little bit warmer each postseason they’re a first-round exit.

To be fair, the Giants would likely be fine never having a losing season, given their recent history.

ESPN analyst Evan Cohen theorized after mid-October’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals that if the Steelers’ season continues to run off the rails, it could spell the end of Tomlin in Pittsburgh.

“A losing season? On the table. Mike Tomlin and the Steelers breaking up after this season? On the table. Rodgers not playing after this season? On the table. This was a, literally, shoot yourself in the foot kind of game. It’s ridiculous that they lost this game,” Cohen said on ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike.

The Steelers would surely have to have a plan in place before parting ways with the longest tenured coach in the NFL.

But in the wise words of Tomlin himself:
