Is Josh Allen A Hall Of Famer If He Retires Today? Rich Eisen Debates

We are in late June in the NFL cycle, that means it’s time for arbitrary debates while we wait to watch our teams at training camp. Is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen a gold jacket Hall of Famer if he never plays another snap of football? Rich Eisen asks the question on the latest episode of the Rich Eisen show.

“I think one day, I am going to see him in the Hall of Fame. I think one day he will have a bust in the Hall of Fame,” Eisen begins. “I just think he needs more days as an NFL player for that to happen… Just knowing how the voting process takes place.”

Allen famously got over one of his career humps this February when he brought home is first NFL MVP trophy. Traditionally speaking, an MVP trophy usually stamps your ticket to Canton. Only 13 players in the history of the league have MVP hardware in their trophy case, but no golden jacket.

“Winning the NFL MVP award is the league’s highest individual honor, and rack up at least one of these and you might find yourself on a fast track toward eventually making the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” reads a 2020 CBS Sports article. “Of the 41 MVP winners that are currently retired, 28 are in the Hall of Fame and it will be 29 once Peyton Manning joins them in Canton next year (an astonishing 70.7%).”

Allen By The Numbers

At just 29-years-old, and after just seven NFL seasons, Allen is already the Buffalo Bills franchise leader in rushing touchdowns. He also holds franchise records in career rushing yards by a quarterback, and single season passing yards and touchdowns.

On top of his NFL MVP, he is a two-time All Pro, and a three-time Pro Bowler.

He is 76-34 in the regular season as a starter, a win percentage just shy of 70. He is fifth in the league among active quarterbacks in playoff wins with seven, but as Eisen mentions, he has not yet made it to the Super Bowl.

“Right now he is one of the foils to Patrick Mahomes,” Eisen admits with a scowl. “I need him to beat the foil.”

The Argument Against Allen

Eisen’s argument against the Bills’ lead man was centered around other notable names who have not yet been admitted. He compares Allen’s seven-year resume to that of Phillip Rivers’ and Eli Manning’s 17-season and 16-season careers, respectively.

He says that if those two aren’t in, and Kurt Warner wasn’t a first ballot choice, this seven year sample size just isn’t enough.

“These numbers are not going to get him in,” Eisen continued. “Despite him being one of the best in the league, despite him being an MVP… These numbers just do not support him being in the NFL Hall of Fame.”

This is nothing more than a fun debate to have with your friends while you wait for kick off in August, so do not take Eisen’s grading of the man who is yet to celebrate his 30th birthday too seriously. However, if you needed a reason to defend your quarterback just for the love of the game, Eisen has given you one.
