After Belal Muhammad lost the UFC Welterweight Title to challenger, Jack Della Maddalena, Islam Makhachev relinquished the 155lb title to move up to is moving up fact the Australian and become a two-division – and perhaps even double – champion.
With questions being raised about how the UFC will organize their fall pay-per-view schedule, now that September 13th’s UFC Noche will take place in San Antonio as a fight night, rather than PPV, no one is quite sure when each champion will fight post August.
And whilst Makhachev does not have direct answers for that right now, he did give a little teaser insight into the UFC’s future plans for him to fight.

When Could Islam Makhachev Fight Next?
It is not uncommon for UFC fighters to state publicly that they have big news coming soon, only for them and the promotion to stay silent for the next month as things shift and change.
But the UFC have confirmed that, barring injury, Makhachev will be next in line to challenge for the 170 lb belt.
After UFC 320, which will be in Las Vegas on October 4th, no pay-per-view cards and locations have been finalized, although there is a widely-held belief that at least two of the ppv events will be held in Abu Dhabi and at Madison Square Gardens in New York City, in October and November respectively.
Makhachev has not fought since January, where he submitted fill-in challenger, Renato Moicano, in the first round of the UFC 311 main event, and Maddalena last showed in May at UFC 315, where he beat Muhammad.
Many believe that the UFC is reserving the MSG slot for a potential Jon Jones – Tom Aspinall heavyweight clash, the biggest fight the company can make at this point. So another trip to Abu Dhabi in October could be on the cards for the Dagestani in the near future.
Will The UFC Try To Get Makhachev To Fight In Australia?
Despite it making an abundance of sense to make a big event down under now that both JDM and Alexander Volkanovski hold titles in the welterweight and featherweight divisions, it seems like the UFC has opted to host a fight night in Perth – Maddalena’s home town – in stead of a ppv.

Although fight nights have hosted world title fights in the past, it has become increasingly rare. The last title bout to not be placed on a pay-per-view was nearly two years ago in September 2023, when Valentina Shevchenko rematched Alexa Grasso for the UFC Women’s Flyweight Tittle, that ultimately resulted in a draw.
And the last men’s title fight to be broadcast for free was UFC 267 back in 2021, between Jan Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira, which was the first free numbered UFC event in a decade.
So it is unlikely that we will get to see a dream double title fight in Australia, but both Volk and JDM will almost certainly have another title fight by the end of the year.
