Islam Makhachev‘s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, recently shared his thoughts on his client’s next move. He named former champion Kamaru Usman as the ideal opponent based on his legacy and skill.
Makhachev joined the list of two-division UFC champions at UFC 322. He defeated Jack Della Maddalena in dominant fashion. The Dagestani controlled every round and earned a clean sweep on the scorecards, with each judge scoring the fight 50-45.
Many wondered what could be next for Makhachev after his flawless welterweight title victory. He could have returned to lightweight after accomplishing his goal or stay at welterweight to defend his title.
Abdelaziz ended the speculation and revealed his client is eyeing Usman.
“[Makhachev] said he wants to fight Kamaru Usman. [Usman had] five title defenses, greatest welterweight of all time,” Abdelaziz told Full Send MMA. “Beating all these young guys, what does that do for his legacy? It [does] nothing for his legacy. Kamaru Usman is a very tough opponent and I represent him too. And it’s not an easy night for anybody.”
Abdelaziz added that Usman’s performance hasn’t declined with age. He stressed that ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ remains a serious contender.
“He’s the real deal and Islam wants to fight the real deal.”
Islam Makhachev Expresses Interest in Fighting Kamaru Usman
Islam Makhachev also expressed interest in fighting Kamaru Usman for his first welterweight title defense. He said Usman deserves the first shot at his title and based it on his latest win and accomplishments.
Usman earned a unanimous decision win over Joaquin Buckley in June. That victory snapped his three-fight losing streak. It also pushed him back into the title picture.
During his appearance on About Last Fight, Makhachev praised Carlos Prates and Michael Morales‘ performances at UFC 322. He was impressed, but believes Usman would still be a tougher challenge than Prates and Morales.
“Today, the two fighters did very well, [Michael] Morales and [Carlos] Prates. But I still think Kamaru [Usman] can beat them both,” Makhachev said. “Kamaru is the biggest [name] and they are young fighter who are hungry, but Kamaru is still dangerous and one of the best in this game.”
Makhachev then gave a direct answer to his preferred opponent.
“If you give me the choice and ask me, ‘Who you want to fight?’ I would say Kamaru. But it’s not my job. Anyone, I will be ready.”
Ali Abdelaziz Confirms Makhachev Won’t Return to Lightweight
Abdelaziz confirmed that Makhachev will not return to lightweight. He once ruled that division and set the UFC record for consecutive successful title defenses. However, the Dominance MMA manager explained that the weight cut to lightweight took a physical toll.
Speaking with Full Send MMA, Abdelaziz said Makhachev’s move to welterweight is permanent. He believes the smoother weight cut to 170 pounds will help his client compete more often.
“We’re gonna talk with the UFC and we’re gonna see what’s next. Now [Makhachev] doesn’t have to cut this much weight, he can fight every three, four months no problem,” Abdelaziz said. “Yes, [welterweight] is his weight division and he’s not going down to 155 [pounds].”
