‘It’s a Big Deal’: Jordan Spieth Regains Swagger Thanks to Rediscovered ‘Weapon’

Back when Jordan Spieth was dominating major championships as the No. 1 player in the world, his putter was the most dangerous weapon in professional golf. The 32-year-old hasn’t been the same over the last few years because his touch on the greens abandoned him, but his flat stick is finally turning back into a “weapon” just in time for the heart of the PGA Tour schedule.

After gaining 6.92 true strokes from putting at the Genesis Invitational—his best mark since the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge (per Data Golf)—Spieth channeled Michael Jordan’s “I’m back” letter with a similar message of his own. The three-time major champion feels confident on the greens for the first time in years thanks to his rediscovered “weapon.”

It couldn’t come at a better time, as the 2026 Masters is less than two months away.

Jordan Spieth Has Rediscovered His Swagger on the Greens

GettyJordan Spieth is putting better than he has in years.

Through four starts this season, Spieth ranks 17th on Tour in strokes gained from putting. He was the second-best putter in the field at the Genesis Invitational and the third-best at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, gaining a combined 13.36 true strokes from putting in those starts. That’s a level we haven’t seen from Spieth in a half-decade.

After the final round of the Genesis Invitational, Spieth said his method of targeting a single spot on the green is becoming the “weapon” it used to be when he was one of the best putters in the world.

“Looking at my spot, like looking up, looking at the hole, my spot seems to be a weapon that I’ve got back, which is really nice because I feel solid whether it’s breaking or straight, anything in shorter range. Then that frees you up as you start to expand,” Spieth told reporters on Sunday, per The Mirror.

“I putted incredibly well inside of 10 feet, which is something I’ve struggled with at Riviera in particular. That was huge because those were par saves, those were second putts, stuff that keeps momentum going, keeps scorecards clean. And I made a few from outside of 10, which helped kind of the second and the fourth round.”

Spieth made 113 feet of putts in the second round and 97 in the fourth round en route to a T12 finish at Riviera Country Club.

Spieth Will Be a Major Threat at the 2026 Masters

Spieth’s putting in his prime was a spectacle that few players could match. The Texan drained seemingly every putt he looked at in the mid-2010s, especially in the brightest moments on golf’s biggest stages.

That confidence escaped Spieth in 2022 when he finished 155th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained from putting, and he never rebounded. Over the last four seasons, his average finish in strokes gained from putting was 100th on the PGA Tour. It’s no wonder he’s won only twice on Tour since his triumph at the 2017 Open Championship.

If Spieth is ever going to reach the top of the game again, he knows he’ll need to regain his swagger on the greens. Well, after years of frustration and putting woes, he seems to be on his way.

If Spieth can keep riding this momentum on the greens and find a groove with his ball-striking over the next two months, he’ll have a real chance to win his second green jacket at the Masters.
