The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to quite the surprising start to the 2025 NFL season. For a team with a ton of preseason question marks and seemingly not a lot of answers, they are now 3-1 and tied for the AFC South lead with the Indianapolis Colts (they lost to the Los Angeles Rams).
That Jaguars finished off the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday 26-21 in a game that featured some bulletin board material. A few days ago, Niners’ defensive coordinator Robert Saleh accused Jaguars’ head coach Liam Coen of legal sign stealing. As one can imagine, Coen didn’t appreciate it as that’s a fairly serious accusation.
After the game, Coen confronted Saleh.
In his post-game press conference, Coen declined to elaborate on the contents of the tete-a-tete.
“Not a big deal. Just keep that between us … Just going to keep that between us right now, that is it,” Coen said.
Kyle Shanahan pretended to care what went down with Liam Coen and Saleh
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan probably didn’t want to be asked about something like that following the tough loss. I’m sure he has a million things on his mind (giving up 151 rushing yards, turning the ball over four times, etc.) and isn’t overly concerned about a stupid verbal spat between coaches.
“No. I will try to clear it up but I didn’t see what happened, so I am not sure. I don’t think he should be that sensitive about it, but it is what it is. Not to worried about it,” Shanahan said.
Liam Coen didn’t want to address Saleh’s comments
Coen was asked to respond to the comments on Friday morning and wisely declined to comment, preferring to let his team’s play do the talking on the field.
“Yeah, I’m not going to speak on that fully right now, have a huge game for us coming up this weekend. We’ve got a great defense that we’ve got to go and attack and that’s where our whole mindset and mentality is right now,” Coen said.
Earlier that morning, Saleh made some fairly serious accusations directed at Coen.
“Liam [Coen] and his staff, a couple of guys coming from Minnesota, they’ve got a—legally—a really advanced signal stealing type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation,” Saleh said. “They do a great job with it. They formation you to try to find any nugget they can. So we’ve got to be great with our signals and we’ve got to be great with our communication to combat some of the tells that we might give on the field.
“They’re almost elite in that regard. That whole entire tree. From Sean [McVay], to Kevin O’Connell, to all those guys, they all do it. So, there’s challenges. They’re gonna catch us in some situations where they have the advantage and we just gotta play good, sound, fundamental football and do our best to execute.”
Unless someone from the NFL wants to look into any type of sign stealing, this is a dead issue.
