Tennis star Jessica Pegula is on the hunt to win her first-ever Grand Slam title at the 2025 U.S. Open. After taking to Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, Pegula takes on Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals on Thursday, September 4.
Sabalenka punched her ticket to the semifinals after Markéta Vondroušová withdrew due to a knee injury. Last year at the U.S. Open, Sabalenka, ranked No. 1, defeated Pegula 7-5, 7-5 to win the women’s singles tennis title. Pegula has a 2-of-9 career record against the Belarusian star.
However, Pegula is currently playing some of the best tennis of her career. She has yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows. The last time an American woman made back-to-back appearances at the U.S. Open semifinals without dropping a set was Serena Williams in 2014.
“I’ve been able to kind of go into those matches and really take care of business,” Pegula said per ESPN. “I think that’s also what’s given me a lot of confidence, is I’ve played good players but [had] convincing wins over those players.”
As the highest-ranked American (No. 4) still in the tournament, Pegula should have the home crowd cheering her on at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. With the 31-year-old preparing to compete in her second-ever Grand Slam semifinal, fans can expect to see her husband, Tyler Gahagen, supporting her at the match, along with her parents, Terry and Kim Pegula.
Terry and Kim are billionaires who own the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills. Pegula’s mother, who suffered cardiac arrest in 2022, has already attended two of Pegula’s matches. Ahead of Thursday night’s showdown, Terry made quite the entrance into New York.

Before the Bills host the Baltimore Ravens for their 2025 season opener on Sunday, September 7, in Buffalo, Terry made his way to New York City.
According to Huddle Up founder Joe Pompliano, Terry arrived at the U.S. Open in style. Pompliano posted on the eve of the match, “With Jess Pegula playing in the US Open semifinal tomorrow night, her dad, Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula, has anchored his $100 million yacht in Manhasset Bay on Long Island. That’s about a 30-minute drive to watch her play at Arthur Ashe.”
The Pegula’s yacht drew attention last month as New York taxpayers are contributing an unprecedented $850 million toward the new Bills stadium set to open in June 2026. According to The AP, the price is already $560 million over the initial $1.7 billion estimate, with the Pegulas on the hook for overrun costs.

During last year’s U.S. Open, Pegula addressed her privileged upbringing. “People think I have a butler, that I get chauffeured around, that I have a private limo, that I fly private everywhere,” she said, per Yahoo! Sports. “Yeah, I’m definitely not like that.
“I mean, people can think what they want. I just think it’s kind of funny. A butler? I read these comments and I’m like, no, not at all. Maybe I should, I don’t know at this point. Is that what you want me to do? It’s a little annoying, but I think it’s kind of funny because I don’t know anyone that lives like that. It’s outrageous.”
